49Women in Science

The 49Women in Science (49WIS) Committee was formed in 2017 after identifying the need to provide support and guidance for young women pursuing careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Since its creation, it has grown to 50 members comprised of alumnae, current and retired STEM faculty and lab staff and scientists in industry. The group is now proudly known as the 49Women in Science Giving Circle.

The Giving Circle is passionate about supporting Langara’s female STEM students achieve educational and professional equality and success through financial resources, student events, mentorship programs and networking opportunities. Thanks to generous contributions, the Giving Circle supports annual 49WIS scholarships and bursaries, including the 49WIS Single Parent Bursary and the Prism Engineering Award. The group has given out more than 30 awards since 2017. In addition, an endowment was established in 2021 to support student financial aid, programming, mentorship and events.

Student Events

The 49WIS Giving Circle hosts on-campus student events each term. In Fall 2022, we welcomed SFU professor in Bioinformatics, Dr. Fiona Brinkman, and in Spring 2023 Risk Advisory Practice Leader for Deloitte, Erica Pretorius. 49WIS is inclusive of female-identifying students and welcomes everyone to our events.

We are always looking for inspirational guest speakers and invite self-identifying women in STEM to get involved as guest speakers and mentors.

Tri-Mentoring Program for Women in Engineering

The 49WIS Tri-Mentoring Program, which launched in 2021, matches a current female engineering student with a Langara Engineering alumna and a professional Engineer working in the same field of interest as the student.

The program runs from October to April, with groups meeting a minimum of three times during that time to share, support and grow together in their experiences.

If you are interested in learning more about this mentorship program, please connect with Engineering Coordinator Csilla Tamás, at ctamas@langara.ca
