Welcome to the Chinese program at Langara College. Mandarin Chinese has been taught at the the College for more than 20 years. Currently we have 11 levels of courses, all of them university-transferable.
Our courses are designed to meet the needs of the students with various backgrounds and different goals. Our aim is to give our students a solid foundation of Chinese language and introduce them to the rich and colourful Chinese culture.
For native English speakers (people who have had, or almost have had, their entire education in an English speaking country) we have four foundational courses with emphasis on the basic vocabulary, sentence structures and grammar rules.
For Chinese dialect speakers (people who speak only Cantonese or another dialect) we have two conversational courses with emphasis on the Mandarin phonetic system, listening comprehension and oral expressions.
For native Mandarin speakers (people who grew up and had three or more years of schooling in Mainland China, Taiwan or Singapore) we now offer four levels of courses. Students who have finished grade 3 or 4 of elementary school in China or Taiwan can take CHIN 2211/2213; students who have finished elementary school in China or Taiwan and can read and write Chinese comfortably at intermediate level can take CHIN 3331/3333.
There are no placement tests for Chinese courses. However, before registering in a course, please read the prerequisites carefully.
