Every year, Langara College students of Intermediate Japanese II are invited to participate in the Japanese Speech Contest sponsored by the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver. The contest takes place at the University of British Columbia in the spring and draws contestants from secondary and post-secondary institutions throughout British Columbia.
Langara College has distinguished itself consistently over the past few years, winning awards in the intermediate category including first prizes. Langara students are frequent participants at the annual national finals. In 2011 a Langara student won first prize in the intermediate category at the national finals.
Students too shy to enter the contest are invited to attend the competition at UBC as enthusiastic supporters of their classmates who are accepted as contestants.
