Langara's Social Service Worker Department was first established in the early 1970s and was originally called the Welfare Aide Program. It was introduced to train students to become social work assistants. The curriculum was modeled on that of the Bachelor of Social Work degree. It was one of the first programs in the Province to offer this training.
The Social Service Worker Program has changed over the years but has maintained it commitment to offer a generic training opportunity to students who wish to work in frontline positions in the social service field.
The faculty are all registered social workers with considerable experience in the social welfare field. They are actively engaged in the community and the social service sector in addition to their teaching responsibilities in the program. This allows them to stay current regarding changes and developments in the social welfare field. The faculty have developed working relationships with dozens of agencies and programs which has allowed the students in the Program to choose from among a diverse selection of areas to do their practicum placements.
The department and its faculty are committed to providing an outstanding educational experience to students which will equip students to become successful lifelong learners. This is reflected in the success of a significant number of our graduates who complete Coordinated Social Service Worker Diplomas and bachelors degrees in Social Work or in Child and Youth Care.
