The Department of Recreation Studies was founded in 1967 and is comprised of two areas: Recreation Leadership and Recreation Management. The Recreation Leadership program has graduated more than 900 students into employment in the recreation field and in the related areas of business management, government administration, teaching and community development.
Our mission is to provide outstanding education to students so that graduates are able to make meaningful contributions to the field of recreation. To this end, the Recreation department works closely with our students, taking a keen interest in their progress during and after their studies at Langara.
The faculty takes pride in keeping themselves current in the field and community. We are active members, taking part in various organizations including the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Vancouver, the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, the BC Recreation and Parks Association, and the Recreation Facilities Association of BC.
The Recreation programs recognizes and thanks our many community partners who have supported us throughout the years. These include a wide variety of municipal, private clubs, commercial and not-for-profit etc., recreation agencies.

Recreation Leadership Diploma Program
The two-year Recreation Leadership Diploma Program at Langara College is for students who are looking to create environments for people to experience the benefits of quality recreation, while developing each student's personal skills and competencies.
Courses address leadership, program and event development, facility operations, budgeting, human relationships, community and business development, and management.
Practical experience is emphasized throughout the program, both in the classroom and in the field. Students will gain a well-rounded and thorough understanding of the recreation field, including facilities and other environments. each student will have the opportunity to develop their personal portfolio and to directly apply their knowledge during internship. Bachelor of Recreation Management
The Bachelor of Recreation Management is a degree completion program (third and fourth year of a bachelor's degree) for students who have a recreation diploma or equivalent, and who are interested in pursuing careers in the Recreation Field. All courses are offered on-line which makes it flexible to perspective students currently working in recreation. The program provides students with a deeper understanding of community recreation, business and management theory and gives them the knowledge and tools to move ahead in their recreation careers.
