Taking the next step forward from Practical Darkroom, students will learn how to print with multiple negatives, digital vs. analogue practices in the darkroom, further explorations in film/developer types, chemistry, paper choices, gold toning and advanced bleaching for contrast changes.Prerequisites:Practical Darkroom

Through lectures, demonstrations and hands-on experience, learn the basic principles and practices of the traditional black & white darkroom. Topics include film processing, contact prints, enlargements and some print finishing techniques. Students require a 35mm (or Medium Format) film camera with manual exposure capability.

Explore the problems and solutions specific to shooting food and beverages. Students will produce their own work with the help of a professional food stylist.Prerequisites:Advanced Studio Lighting or equivalent

This course is geared towards artists pursuing exhibitions or careers in public and commercial art galleries. The twelve week course covers range of practical exercises and critical theory in preparation for approaching the art market. This includes sessions in portfolio construction, exhibition design, gallery guidelines and procedures, exclusive Vancouver gallery visits and guest speaker curators.

Designed to familiarize students with the capabilities of Adobe Photoshop. Students learn methods of enhancing and working with high resolution images for various media output. This course provides students with the confidence to tackle complex photo-illustrations.Prerequisites:Mac or PC experience.Note: This course is taught on a Mac.

Using the newest Adobe technology, students will learn advanced methods of photo-illustration and composing multi-layered images. Emphasis in this course is placed equally on technical and aesthetic imaging considerations, and production techniques for photo-composites.Prerequisites:Adobe Photoshop Level 1 or equivalent

Expand upon the experience gained in Practical Lighting with lectures, demonstrations, student shooting sessions, and an intensive, in-depth look at photographic lighting. This course introduces students to the very specialized genre of interior and exterior architectural photography. Aspects such as equipment selection, lighting, contemporary styles and aesthetics, as well as the business side of the genre are all addressed. For the shooter that appreciates the beauty and challenge of photographs which adorn the pages of contemporary "home-style" magazines, this course is a must!Prerequisites:Advanced Studio Lighting

This entry-level course covers the basics of photography as they apply to Digital SLR cameras. Covering traditional aspects such as exposure, depth-of-field and composition, the course also delves into basic digital controls such as white balance, histograms and elemental workflow. A DSLR is a must for this course.Prerequisites:Basic computer skills.Note: The online version of this course is offered through Blackboard CE. This course teaches you how to go from A to Z with your digital photos. It will help you take your photos through the necessary process to do what you want with them, as well as show you how to obtain maximum quality in every photo, through exposure to archiving, and from digital specific techniques to digital specific problems. An introductory course on developing the necessary communication and technical skills in obtaining the most out of models. Students will gain practical experience through thematic studio sessions ranging from commercial comedy to corporate drama, music, beauty and sports as they further investigate their DSLR or SLR camera functions. Also explored are strategies in effective auditioning and hiring of 'talent'.Prerequisites:Basic Photography (film or digital)

This course is for photographers planning on producing large-scale shoots for projects such as advertising, editorial and fine art. This course teaches students how to produce their own work including propping, location scouting, stylists, animal wranglers and set building. Students will produce 2 of their own shoots using these production techniques. Prerequisites:Advanced Studio Lighting & Photoshop Level 2

Learn to make rather than take photographs by exploring the fundamentals of composition, design and conceptualization. Focus on contemporary and historical issues of photography and its vocabulary (balance, movement, contrast, juxtaposition, etc.). Also study the impact of these visual aspects on commercial and fine art buyers. Practical applications and practices are demonstrated throughout the course.Prerequisites:Practical Lighting or equivalent.

This course is designed for students who are beyond the basics of photography and covers aspects such as shooting raw vs. j-peg, custom white-balance control, a review of depth of field and composition, as well as lighting theory and practice for still-life and people. Through a series of lectures, in depth critiques and location shooting sessions, students will gain an understanding of the various approaches to photographing the landscape-from the natural to the urban and from the conventional to the unconventional. This course is designed to teach students how to capture the essence of the urban landscape in a personalized and generally edgy fashion. Comprising largely of field trips, the course tackles equipment issues, the ethics and practicalities of photographing street life, and when and where to best break photographic rules. To heck with expensive battery-powered strobe rentals; see what you can do with just a couple of good quality flash units and a little imagination. Lighting master Morris will take students through the theory and practice of small flash lighting and introduce them to the incredible potential of modern units when combined with the numerous methods of triggering them.

This course is for the photographer or illustrator wanting to delve more deeply into the dual personality world of photography/illustration. Using three dimensional structures, drawing, painting, collage combined with photography add new dimensions to concepts and problem-solving for editorial, art and commercial assignments. The course puts emphasis on combining analogue and digital techniques as well, where originality is paramount. In addition, historical and current approaches to photo- illustration will be covered. This class will especially appeal to those who like a hands-on tactile approach to creativity.Pre-requisites: Advanced Studio Lighting, Photoshop Level 2

This course introduces students to the extraordinary world of Macro Photography. Whether shooting nature, scientific or abstract images, Macro Photography exposes students to an entirely new world of image making. Students will learn about the tools and technical considerations of macro work and will explore a world where detail and limited depth of field create extraordinary landscapes.

Add to your stylistic repertoire and technical abilities while exploring unconventional processes. Focusing on non-traditional and historical methods, students will create photographs using hand-coated paper, pinhole photography, photograms, photomontage and solarization. Students are encouraged to experiment, and challenged to use these techniques to create contemporary photographic art.Prerequisites:Basic Darkroom

This course is designed to offer students a thorough survey and practice of digital fine art printing. Many contemporary fine art photographers are now choosing digital processing to produce their limited edition prints, and galleries have become much more accepting of digital media as worthy of fine art photography collections. While much of the imagery continues to be created using the silver halide process, the great improvement in inkjet printers, inks and papers has led to giclee printing proving a worthy competitor of traditional silver gelatin prints. The course covers everything from ICC profiling to piezography, which is the finest method of producing a black and white print, and students will be able to produce numerous archival quality prints throughout the twelve session course.Prerequisites: Advanced Studio Lighting & Photoshop Level II

Designed to be an extensive exploration of the view camera, this course covers a great deal of technical material. Become familiar with the mechanics of a 4x5 camera, its operation, applications and special effects capabilities.Prerequisites:Advanced Studio Lighting or equivalent.

Explore portraiture within the realms of several photographic applications: classic (traditional), commercial (editorial & advertising) and fine art (interpretive & abstract). The course covers lighting, posing, style and concept of the photographic portrait.Prerequisites:Advanced Studio Lighting

Discover the various aspects of fashion photography including styles and types of fashion shooting, lighting techniques, and the technique and protocol of working with models. Shooting sessions with models, make-up artists and fashion stylists, along with a guest lecture by a modelling agency director are included in this coursePrerequisites:Advanced Studio Lighting.

This course immerses students in illustrative photography. The content favours a fine art approach but is still highly relevant to stylistically driven commercial photography. This course deals primarily with concept and execution, utilizing all of the student's artistic and technical skills in relation to subjects such as style, communication and eroticism.Prerequisites:Advanced Studio Lighting.

Students continue on from Composition and Design to look at design theory in more depth. Shooting assignments are complimented with an ongoing assignment to be completed throughout the 12 weeks. Topics include the psychology of seeing, unusual composition techniques, image association, deliberate image distortions, telling stories with sequences of images and creating a simple multi-media presentation of a final assignment.Prerequisites:Composition and Design, Practical Lighting, Photoshop Level 1

This is an introductory course to today's contemporary and competitive world of wedding photography designed to help students grasp basic issues and techniques of wedding photography, from communicating with your subjects to stylistic and technical approaches that range from formal to candid. It also addresses business and marketing, allowing photographers to provide contemporary wedding photography with an artistic sensibility.Prerequisites:Practical Lighting.

This course introduces students to a selection of experimental techniques in fine-art photography and alternative image creation ideas centered on (though not limited to) the darkroom. The course encourages individual tastes and styles and fosters innovation in the darkroom. Classroom discussions, instructor demonstrations, student darkroom experimentation and a group field trip are all included in the Creative Darkroom.Prerequisites:Practical Darkroom or equivalent

Part of the Business Practices series on the logistics of running a photographic business. Emphasis is on quoting and estimating, ethical business practices, copyright issues and legalities, permits, licenses, GST and PST, NAFTA, photographic associations, accounting, and financial planning.Prerequisites:Advanced Studio Lighting or by permission of instructor.

This course examines the world of magazine photography and what it takes to get those juicy assignments, produce the images and make a living in one of the most highly-charged areas in today's photography market. Students will work on a wide range of typical editorial assignments such as portraiture, travel, conceptual photo illustration, fashion and still life images.Prerequisites:Advanced Studio Lighting or equivalent

Learn the basics of colour printing. Emphasis is on printing from a master and your own negatives. Students will learn about the colour wheel, filters, film and papers, processing and print spotting with extensive hands-on in our colour lab.Prerequisites:Basic Darkroom or equivalent
