Courses
No previous experience needed. Learn to operate a sewing machine, use a commercial pattern, choose suitable fabrics, do pattern layouts, pinning, cutting, and updated marking techniques. Construction methods include seams, hems, patch & side-seam pockets, and elastic or drawstring casings. By the end of this class, students will have sewn a tote bag and pajama pants. A list of required supplies will be provided prior to your first class. Additional costs approximately $10-$50 depending on your fabric/pattern choice. Prerequisites: none.
Use the knowledge and skills gained in Sewing: An Introduction to Sewing to expand your abilities while constructing a simple project using a commercial pattern. Learn how to: sew darts, pleats, waistband, hems, install an invisible/lapped zipper, and use fusible interfacing. The instructor will provide you with a list of items to bring to the first class. You will also be given additional instructions regarding choosing fabrics and patterns. Approximate cost of additional supplies is $10-$60 depending on your fabric/pattern choice. Prerequisite: Sewing: An Introduction, or equivalent.

Acquire more advanced skills while constructing your choice of blouse or dress shirtand learn about set-in sleeves, collars & cuffs, darts, placket openings, buttons &buttonholes. Please come prepared to the first class your basic sewing kit and asuitable pattern for a blouse or dress shirt along with enough fabric to complete your project. Approximate cost of additional supplies is $20-$80, depending on your fabric/pattern choice. Prerequisite: Sewing Level 1 or equivalent.

Use the knowledge and skills gained in Sewing Level 2 (VFDE 1017) and add to your skills, acquire faster and more professional techniques, and learn new methods to improve your final project. Receive individual instruction & guidance on a garment of your choice, from form fitting dresses, and tailored suit jackets, to a winter coat. Includes lessons on a variety of garment construction methods required to complete your project such as: pattern alteration & sizing, fabric selection, fitting, uses & types of interfacing, set in sleeves, cuffs, invisible & fly-front zippers, handling bias cuts, bagging a garment and much more. Please bring any pattern you'd like along with fabric suitable for the project, sewing notions and pen/paper to first class. Additional costs approximate cost $20-$100 depending on your fabric/pattern choice. Prerequisite: Sewing Level 2 or equivalent. Course may be applied as credit towards the Langara CS at VSB Sewing and Fashion Arts Certificate.
