Tips for Preparing for the Career Fair
Research participating employers. Read about them at this site, and go to their website links. Organizations often have career sections on their websites, aimed at graduate and student opportunities. Target your time at the Fair by ensuring that you visit the employers that look like they may have the part-time or summer job, practicum experience, career opportunity, or volunteer position that you are seeking.
Bring several copies of your updated resume. Ensure that you have updated contact information ready to offer. You can print off personal business cards at this site. Be prepared to answer detailed questions about your skills and experiences.
Look the part! Your face to face interaction with employers at the Fair may, in fact, be mini interviews, and you’ll want to make a good impression with a clean and neat appearance.
Practice what you’ll say to prospective employers. Be able to relate your background - your past work and volunteer experiences, your education, and your hobbies - to the kinds of jobs for which exhibitors are recruiting. Be prepared with opening statements that give your name, area or study, and interests.
Ask questions that will help both you and the employer to know whether you might be a good match. You will want to know whether a job/career with an organization will allow you to develop your skills and areas of interest. Ask about entry level positions, hiring practices, and application processes. Inquire about industry trends.
Student Business Cards
Business cards are valuable tools in your job search. While complementing your resume, you may feel comfortable distributing them more freely than the resume. Include your name, contact telephone and email, city, and a skills tag, or the position that you are seeking. You can order basic cards from print shops for reasonable rates or download them for free from shareware sites, such as the following website (click one of the several dozen free card options that are offered). Students that attend one of the Langara pre-Employment Day workshops will receive 50 free personalized business card which will be available for pick up at the Employment Day.
Let us know which companies you would like to see at the Fair. E-mail us your top three choices to careerfair@langara.bc.ca
Student volunteers are always needed at the Student Employment Day for a variety of positions.
