Tutoring in the Writing Centre

The Writing Centre accepts applications at the beginning of each semester – spring, summer, and fall – from students wishing to become peer-tutors.

Qualifications
To qualify, you should:

  • have completed six credits of first-year English (or equivalent)
  • be a full-time student (taking at least three courses)
  • be eligible for SWAP (Student Work Assistance Program)*
  • have excellent writing skills
  • have excellent interpersonal skills
  • enjoy helping others.

Benefits
Working in the Writing Centre gives you a paying job right here on campus and helps you, through teaching others, become a better writer yourself.

Training
Tutors will receive training at the beginning of their first semester of tutoring.

Hours
A normal assignment is four hours per week. Depending on the Writing Centre’s needs and the tutor’s own schedule, it can be a little more or less than that.

Applications
To apply, please send an e-mail to the coordinator, indicating your interest and (briefly) your reasons for wanting to work in the Writing Centre.

For the summer (May-August), please contact
Simon Casey: scasey@langara.bc.ca

For the fall (September-December) or spring (January-April), please contact
Megan Otton: motton@langara.bc.ca

* Most students are eligible for SWAP. To apply, go to the Financial Aid office on the first floor of the B-building and fill out a “Student Work Assistance Program” application – but you don’t have to do this before applying to work at the Writing Centre.
