Department Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded for academic merit. In order for the competition for scholarships to be as equitable as possible, an applicant must meet certain eligibility conditions. Please check with the Financial Aid Department for these conditions. As well, scholarship recipients must satisfy any donor requirements and generally must be Canadian citizens, landed immigrants, or conventional refugees with proof of status.
Langara College scholarships include the following:
- General Scholarships that are available to Langara College students currently registered in a minimum of 12 credits and who were registered in a minimum of 12 credits in one of the past two semesters. Applications may be required, and can be obtained from the Financial Aid Department.
- Departmental Scholarships that are normally available to Langara College students registered in a minimum of 12 credits and who were registered in a minimum of 12 credits in one of the past two terms. (Exceptional circumstances may apply.) Students receive the recommendation of program faculty when they meet specific scholarship criteria. Please check with specific departments to see if an application is required.
BIOLOGY
GOLDIE BARON SCHWARZ SCHOLARSHIP recognizes achievement by a Langara College Biology student registered in two second year Biology courses, who demonstrates a genuine interest in pursuing a career in conservation of biodiversity. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (Fall)
LENI GELTEN BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a non-major Biology student, who has completed two of the following ourses: Biology 1116, 1216, 1190 or 1191. Preference will be given to a student who has completed Biology 1116 and/or Biology 1216. The eligible student must be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 (Spring).
MARGE AND TONY GLASS BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who completed Biology 1115 and 1215 and demonstrated a high level of achievement in both courses. The chosen recipient must display a passion for biology, and must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. Preference will be given to mature students or students who plan to enter the teaching profession. (Spring)
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who has completed BIOL 1115 and 1215 and who has taken or is currently enrolled in at least 4 of the following second-year courses: BIOL 2315, 2415, 2330, 2430, 2370 or 2470. A minimum of two of these courses must be completed prior to the application deadline. The eligible student must be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.33. (Spring)
REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION OF BC BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to the two students in Biology Field School who achieved the highest grades in General Biology 1 and General Biology 2. The student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater. (Fall)
ROSE BING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student with a high achievement in the Biology laboratory portion and has completed first year Biology. The recipient must also be enrolled in or have completed at least two of the following second year courses: BIOL 2315, 2415, 2330, 2430, 2370, or 2470. Students must be enrolled in 9 credits and have a minimum GPA of 3.33. Preference is given to students completing an Associate’s Degree in Microbiology/Molecular Biology. (Spring)
BETTY AND TONY PLETCHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who has completed both BIOL 1115 and BIOL 1215 and at least two second year Biology courses. The student must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 credit hours and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.33. (Spring)
CHEMISTRY
CATHY HASINOFF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP recognizes a female Chemistry student who achieved at least a grade of 11 out of 15 in the lab component of CHEM 1220, and who has the highest overall grade in the course in the previous 12 months. (Fall)
DAVID STEINER MEMORIAL CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to students enrolled in Chemistry at Langara College who have demonstrated a strong interest in Chemistry and plan to continue studies in Chemistry or a related field. The eligible student must have completed Chemistry 1120 and 1220 and obtained at least an “A” grade in both courses. Preference will be given to students who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 over the most number of terms at Langara College. (Spring)
COMPUTER SCIENCE
DARRYL WONG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who has completed CPSC 1160 and CPSC 1181 and achieved the highest grade averaged in these two classes. (Fall)
HABIB KASHANI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to an Applied Computer Science Technology (ACST) student, as defined by completion of hardware courses CPSC 1401- Introduction to Computer Electronics and CPSC 2401-Digital Systems Design, with the highest combined average in these two courses. All candidates must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8. (Spring or Summer)
HUGH LEFEBVRE MEMORIAL CSIS CO OPERATIVE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to full-time Co-op students demonstrating academic excellence in the first two terms of one of the CSIS two-year programs. The recipient must have the highest cumulative GPA. (Spring, Summer, Fall)
PETER LAU E-BUSINESS CASE STUDY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 who is currently registered in the Fall term of one of the CSIS programs at Langara College. The award recognizes the best case study on e-business that was written in the preceding Spring or Summer semesters. The successful student must have at least one semester to complete at Langara College. (Fall)
TOM HARRIS MEMORIAL BURSARY/ SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to students who have completed the first two terms of the Arts and Science (Applied Computer Science and Technology) Program. The award is granted based on demonstrated financial need (a bursary application must be completed) and satisfactory academic standing (GPA of 2.33). Recipients must also exhibit the characteristics demonstrated by Tom Harris - as a skilful manager of the technical aspects of his work and a cheerful “willingness to give”. (Fall)
LIBRARY AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
BRITISH COLUMBIA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP is for students registered in 4th term of the Library and Information Technology Program who have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5. (Spring)
ELVA M. WILSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP recognizes one student who has completed the first term and one student who has completed the third term of the Library and Information Technology Program. Students must demonstrate academic achievement, be enrolled in 3+ courses, and be making contributions to the field and program through publications, tutoring etc. (Spring)
PETER R. KELLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who is registered in the 3rd term of the Library and Information Technology Program and has demonstrated academic achievement in the first year of the program. (Fall)
MATHEMATICS
ERNEST E. LIVESEY MEMORIAL PRIZE IN MATHEMATICS is awarded to recognize the student or students who annually demonstrate the highest achievement in university transfer mathematics/statistics courses. The recipient must be nominated by a member of the Mathematics and Statistics Department and have completed at least two University transferable Mathematics or Statistics courses. They must also intend to transfer to a BC University or continue with second year studies at Langara, and be enrolled in at least nine credits in the semester for which the student was nominated. Nominated students receive an application from the department. (Summer)
