Department Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded for academic merit. In order for the competition for scholarships to be as equitable as possible, an applicant must meet certain eligibility conditions. Please check with the Financial Aid Department for these conditions. As well, scholarship recipients must satisfy any donor requirements and generally must be Canadian citizens, landed immigrants, or conventional refugees with proof of status.

Langara College scholarships include the following:

  • General Scholarships that are available to Langara College students currently registered in a minimum of 12 credits and who were registered in a minimum of 12 credits in one of the past two semesters. Applications may be required, and can be obtained from the Financial Aid Department.
  • Departmental Scholarships that are normally available to Langara College students registered in a minimum of 12 credits and who were registered in a minimum of 12 credits in one of the past two terms. (Exceptional circumstances may apply.) Students receive the recommendation of program faculty when they meet specific scholarship criteria. Please check with specific departments to see if an application is required.

 


ABORIGINAL STUDIES

REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION OF BC ABORIGINAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP goes to a graduating student in the Aboriginal Studies Program with the highest grade point average who is enrolled in or has completed either ABST 2100/2101 or ABST 2230/2240.  The student must have been registered in a minimum of 12 credit hours in the previous term of the program. (Fall)

 

ANTHROPOLOGY

THE BRAIN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a current Langara student who has completed a minimum of three courses at Langara, in either Sociology or Anthropology (with at least one course in each of the two disciplines), and who is currently enrolled in, or who has already completed at least one second-year course in Sociology or Anthropology at Langara.  The recipient must have the highest cumulative GPA, plus evidence of student commitment to further academic studies at university, preferably in Sociology and/or Anthropology. (Spring)

 

APPLIED URBAN & RURAL PLANNING

REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION OF BC APPLIED URBAN AND RURAL PLANNING SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student in the Applied Urban and Rural Planning Program. Students must have demonstrated excellent academic performance in the first two terms of the program planning courses.  The eligible student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and must be continuing in the Applied Urban and Rural Planning Program. (Fall)

 

ASIAN STUDIES

VANCOUVER CANADA-CHINA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS:
1) The Katherine Wilmott Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students with a minimum “B” average in first full-term of the Asian Studies Program with demonstrated financial need.(Spring)
2) The Earl Wilmott Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed the 3rd term of the Asian Studies Program, with a minimum “B” average. Student must demonstrate financial need. (Spring)
3) The Earl Wilmott Memorial Scholarship is for a student who has completed the second term of the Asian Studies Program with a minimum “B” average.   The recipient must demonstrate financial need. (Fall)

 

BUDDHIST STUDIES

UNIVERSAL BUDDHIST TEMPLE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to the student(s) with the highest marks in the RELS 1210 - Buddhism term project on the study of Buddhism, its history and contribution to the Canadian fabric. (Spring)

 

CANADIAN STUDIES

TOM ROBERTSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP recognizes a student who has successfully completed at least two of Canadian Studies 1110, 1120, 1130, 1140, or 1150 and at least two other Canadian Studies program courses.  Grade point average will be considered.  Student must demonstrate a sustained interest and curiosity in Canadian Studies and the intention to pursue further study in Canadian Studies.

 

CLASSICAL STUDIES

MALCOLM MCGREGOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS recognise students with academic excellence in the Classical Studies program.

Award I: Student must be enrolled in at least the third term of the Classical Studies Program at Langara College and have completed four courses in the program.  The recipient must be enrolled in or have completed CLST 1110 and 1120.  The recipient must also be enrolled in or have completed two of the following courses: HIST 2210, HIST 2211, LATN 1115, LATN 1117, GREK 1115, GREK 1215. (Spring, Summer, or Fall)

Award II: Students must have completed all the requirements for the Arts and Science (Classical Studies) Diploma or the Associate of Arts Degree (Area of Concentration: Classical Studies).  Students must have completed requirements within the past three semesters and need not be currently enrolled. (Spring, Summer or Fall)

 

TED LANGLEY SCHOLARSHIP recognises students who have completed the first term of the Arts and Science (Classical Studies) Diploma or Associate of Arts (Classical Studies) Degree at Langara College.  It is awarded to a second term Classical Studies student.  Students must have completed at least four courses (12 credit hours), including CLST 1110 or CLST 1120, and a first year English course.  They must be enrolled in at least four courses (12 credit hours) in their second term, including CLST 1110 or CLST 1120, and a first year English course.  A minimum grade point average of 3.33 in their most recent term is required. (Spring, Summer or Fall)

 

 

 

COMMUNICATIONS

MARGO HARTLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP goes to a student who has completed two Langara Communications courses with outstanding marks while enrolled in full-time studies. (Fall)

 

CRIMINAL JUSTICE

J.S. OSBORNE SCHOLARSHIP FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE is awarded to a student who demonstrates good academic ability in courses at Langara and has demonstrated their interest in social justice through volunteer work, paid work, projects or interests at school.  The interest should be detailed in a 300 word essay submitted to the Chair of the Criminal Justice Department before February 14th of each year.  The recipient must have completed at least 30 credits in any program and have a stated intention to pursue further education at any post-secondary institution.  Please pick up and submit applications for this award to the Chair of the Criminal Justice Department at Langara College. (Spring)

MIKE PASSMORE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE is a scholarship that recognizes a student registered in the third term of the Criminal Justice Program who intends to pursue a career in the field of Criminal Justice. The recipient must have demonstrated good academic performance in the first two terms of the program.  They must also demonstrate good citizenship in the program, the College and the community, particularly in group work and in relation to issues of social justice.  The recipient must also demonstrate financial need. (Fall)

 

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

PATRICIA MCKENZIE SCHOLARSHIP recognizes a student registered in the third term of the Early Childhood Education Program who achieved a minimum “B” average from the successful completion of the 2nd term and who demonstrated a major contribution to the class by displaying a cooperative, understanding and helpful attitude towards his/her peers and a commitment to children and the field of early childhood education. (Summer or Fall)

 

ENGLISH

ALBERT AND NORA TOLMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to students who have achieved an ‘A’ in two first year English courses. They must be currently enrolled in a Creative Writing course, and demonstrate outstanding achievement. (Fall)

BOB STEELE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP recognizes a Langara College athletic team player who has completed at least one second year English course, preferably Canadian Literature, with a minimum C- grade.  The Recipient must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0. and must also demonstrate financial need. (Fall and Spring)

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT CREATIVE WRITING SCHOLARSHIP recognizes a student who has successfully completed at least one Creative Writing course with a minimum GPA of 3.5. (Spring)

JON FURBERG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP honours a student who has successfully completed English 2223 and/or English 2224 with a minimum grade point average of 3.5. (Spring)

TOM MEIKLE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to recognize first-year English students at Langara College. The recipient must have the highest grades in English 1127/1128. A committee of first-year English instructors will recommend the most promising student on the basis of a combination of marks, writing skills, love of literature and general enthusiasm for the study of English. (Spring)

W49 WRITING COMPETITION AWARDS are awarded to winners of the writing competition for W49 Magazine. First and second place prizes in the categories of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. (Fall)

 

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

B.C. HYDRO ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP is for a student who is registered in or has completed ENVS 2390 or ENVS 2100 (Environmental Issues). Student must have taken a minimum of six of the eleven core courses in the Environmental Studies Program and must have the highest cumulative GPA. (Fall)

REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION OF BC ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP (SCIENCE MAJOR STREAM) is awarded to the student who is enrolled in Environmental Studies Field School/ENVST 2470 and has completed General Biology 1/ BIO 1115, General Chemistry 1/CHEM 1120 and Environmental Issues/ENVST 2390 with the highest cumulative GPA.  (Spring)

 

GEOGRAPHY

J.D. GRAY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN GEOGRAPHY is for a student who has completed or is completing at least three Geography courses, both Human and Scientific. Student must demonstrate academic excellence and intend to continue studies in Geography. (Spring)

REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION OF BC GEOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIPS is awarded to two students with the highest CGPA (minimum 3.5) who have completed at least two of the following courses: GEOG 1130, GEOG 1150, GEOG 2230. (Spring)

 

HISTORY

GERTRUDE ANNE LANGRIDGE MEMORIAL HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to students who have completed a minimum of two History courses and are currently registered in a History course.   Recipients must also be in the third term of an Arts program, registered currently in 12 or more credits, and have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 in the two completed History courses. (Fall)

 

LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES

LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to students who have completed Latin American Studies LAMS 1100, LAMS 1101 and at least 2 other LAMS Program courses. Grade point average will be considered and Students must demonstrate an interest in Latin American Studies and an intention to pursue further studies in the field. (Spring)

 

MODERN LANGUAGES

GERTRUDE ANNE LANGRIDGE MEMORIAL MODERN LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP is for students in the French Program who have completed a minimum of one French course while enrolled in a full academic program. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5. (Fall, Spring)

JEAN L’ABBE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is an award for students who have demonstrated excellence in at least two French courses while enrolled in four courses. The chosen recipient must have the highest grade in the highest level of French courses, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5. Should there be a tie, the student with the highest cumulative GPA will receive the award. (Spring)

 

PSYCHOLOGY

PSYCHOLOGY 2320 RESEARCH PAPER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to recognize research excellence in Psychology 2320 - Research Methods in Psychology.  The award is given to the best group research paper in the Psychology 2320 courses.  In order to be eligible, students must receive credit for the paper.  The award is divided equally amongst group members. (Fall and Spring)

 

SOCIAL SERVICE WORKER

ELLEN LEONA BATEMAN MEMORIAL AWARDS: 

Award 1: This award goes to a student who has completed the 1st term of the Social Service Worker Program who has demonstrated academic excellence (cumulative GPA 3.0) and a positive learning attitude. (Spring)

Award 2: A second award for a graduate of the Social Service Worker Program is intended to encourage the student to complete a coordinated diploma in Social Service Work at Langara College.  The student must have successfully completed the Social Service Worker Certificate program, be enrolled in further courses toward the diploma, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75. (Summer)

LORNA GARRETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to the student who has successfully completed the Langara College Social Service Worker Program and has enrolled in a degree-granting institution with the goal of obtaining a Bachelor of Social Work. (Fall)

 

SOCIOLOGY
