Department Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded for academic merit. In order for the competition for scholarships to be as equitable as possible, an applicant must meet certain eligibility conditions. Please check with the Financial Aid Department for these conditions. As well, scholarship recipients must satisfy any donor requirements and generally must be Canadian citizens, landed immigrants, or conventional refugees with proof of status.
Langara College scholarships include the following:
- General Scholarships that are available to Langara College students currently registered in a minimum of 12 credits and who were registered in a minimum of 12 credits in one of the past two semesters. Applications may be required, and can be obtained from the Financial Aid Department.
- Departmental Scholarships that are normally available to Langara College students registered in a minimum of 12 credits and who were registered in a minimum of 12 credits in one of the past two terms. (Exceptional circumstances may apply.) Students receive the recommendation of program faculty when they meet specific scholarship criteria. Please check with specific departments to see if an application is required.
NURSING
CHARTWELLS NURSING EXCELLENCE AWARDS are awarded to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science, Nursing program at Langara College. Recipients must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 and must have completed at least 30 credits towards a degree. In addition to scholarly achievement of the stated cumulative grade point average, applicants must demonstrate financial need. (Fall, Spring, Summer)
ELLEN LOW YING ROETS NURSING SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a candidate who has demonstrated above average ability in clinical practice and has a CGPA of 3.33 during his/her Nursing Program, leading to the BSN. Finances and community involvement will be considered. If the selected candidate is a graduate of the Langara Nursing Diploma Program, evidence must be shown of registration in the final year of the BSN at an approved educational institution. If the selected candidate is a student in the Langara College BSN program, evidence must be shown of registration in Term IX or Term X at Langara College. (Fall of every odd year, i.e. 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017)
ELSEVIER CANADA AWARD is awarded to a second year nursing student who demonstrates academic excellence and enthusiasm for Pathophysiology. Student must achieve a minimum of “B+” in BIOL 2290, Pathophysiology. (Spring)
IRMA MUSIL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS recognize the academic efforts of students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program who have demonstrated an above-average standing and clinical competency. Recipients must be registered in term 6, 7, 8 or 9, have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, have consistently received above-average practice evaluations and have demonstrated financial need. Students must apply for this award and application forms are available from the Nursing Department at the start of the term. (Fall and Spring)
IRMA MUSIL EXCELLENCE AWARD is awarded to recognize the achievement of a student who is graduating from the BSN program. The recipient will be the member of each graduating class who best demonstrates excellence in clinical nursing performance and academic ability. The student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better and be nominated by the faculty from the final semester of the program. (Fall and Spring)
JENNIFER PROSSER WADE FAMILY NURSING SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to recognize an outstanding second-year nursing student who has demonstrated kindness, caring and courage of convictions. The recipient must be enrolled in second-year nursing courses and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. (Fall)
MALEKSULTAN HASSAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP recognizes Langara College Nursing students, with the highest cumulative GPA in the fourth term. The student must also have maintained an above average clinical performance practice. The Nursing Department Awards Committee will base their decision on academic records and recommendations from term four faculty. No applications are necessary. (Summer)
RECEREATION LEADERSHIP
CEI ARCHITECTURE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a full-time Recreation Leadership Diploma Program student who shows strong leadership skills and a high level of interest and aptitude in RECR 2361 (Applied Leadership in Recreation Organizations). The recipient must demonstrate a willingness to help their fellow students throughout the term. (Spring)
CENTAUR PRODUCTS RECREATION LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the fourth term of the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program who exhibits the most dedication and improvement over the duration of the program. (Spring)
COURSE OF A LIFETIME – GODFREY MENDE AWARD recognizes a 4th term student graduating from the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program. Student must have demonstrated a professional approach to their studies during the first year of the program. (Spring)
DARREN PORSNUK SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a fourth term full-time Recreation Leadership Diploma Program student who shows a talent for and interest in the health, wellness and/or fitness sectors. The recipient must show a genuine interest in pursuing a career in these fields. (Spring)
DAVE J. SUSAK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who has successfully completed the first year of the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program and demonstrates a willingness to help others.
D.B. PERKS & ASSOCIATES LTD. SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the third term of the Recreation Leadership Diploma program. The chosen student must have demonstrated a talent for, and an interest in the aquatics area of recreation, as well as a genuine interest in pursuing a career in the field. The student must also demonstrate attributes of a diligent self-starter who works hard to accomplish goals that benefit others. (Fall)
ETHAN FILOSOF - ACRYLCO DASHERBOARD AWARD is presented to a student registered in the Recreation Diploma Program who shows the most interest, and the best aptitude in the following first year courses: RECR 1170 and RECR 1270. (Fall)
FOUR THE FUTURE SCHOLARSHIP honours a Recreation Leadership Diploma Program graduating student who has demonstrated community involvement and/or leadership among his/her peers within the Recreation Leadership Diploma program. The recipient must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.33. (Spring)
HARDEEP BARAICH SCHOLARSHIP is for a student in the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program. The student must have taken on special projects in an arena environment, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be working to support their Education, and have performed admirably on an internship in an arena. (Spring)
HI-PRO SPORTING GOODS SCHOLARSHIP is for a student registered in the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program who achieved the highest grade point average in the third term of the program. (Spring)
JOE DUKOWSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a 4th term Recreation Leadership Diploma student who has demonstrated a talent for, and a genuine interest in recreation facilities operation. Student must also demonstrate attributes of a diligent self-starter who works hard to accomplish goals that benefit others. (Spring)
LINDA ROBERTSON EVENT PLANNING AWARD is awarded to a student who has completed RECR 1168 and has attained the highest percentage grade in that course. (Fall)
LOUIS STERVINOUS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is for a student graduating from the Recreation Diploma Program who demonstrates enthusiasm, motivation and the character and integrity to provide quality customer service in a private club setting. (Spring)
MICHELLE STEBNICKI SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student in the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program who has demonstrated a strong interest and aptitude towards their studies. The student must also demonstrate attributes of a diligent self-starter who works hard to accomplish goals that benefit others. The recipient must be a graduating student enrolled in the fourth term of the Recreation Leadership Diploma program and have attended the program as a part-time student (3-8 credits per term) for at least two terms. (Spring)
OLYMPIA ICE RESURFACERS SCHOLARSHIP honours a full-time student registered in the second year of the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program who achieved the highest combined grade point average in RECR 1170 and 1270 (courses that include ice arena components). (Fall)
PERC EXCELLENCE AWARD is a scholarship awarded to the graduating Recreation Leadership Diploma program student who has demonstrated academic achievement and excellence in leadership, initiative, involvement in the community and respect of his/her peers. The successful recipient should also have an interest in the personal and economic benefits of parks and recreation. (Spring)
REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION OF BC RECREATION DIPLOMA PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS
1) One award goes to the 4th term student registered in 15 credits with the top percentage grade in RECR 1170.
2) One award goes to the 4th term student registered in 15 credits with the top percentage grade in RECR 1270. (Spring)
RECREATION FACILITIES ASSOCIATION OF BC ASSOCIATES’ SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who shows strong leadership and a high level of interest and aptitude in RECR 1162. The recipient must also demonstrate a willingness to help their fellow classmates during the Outdoor Field School component of the course. (Fall)
SMITH-RENNIE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN YOUTH WORK is awarded to a full-time student in the fourth term of the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program who has demonstrated the most interest and aptitude in working in the youth area of recreation. The successful recipient will have performed well on the internship component and have also demonstrated a willingness to help their fellow students during their studies in the program. Preference will be given to a student who has worked part-time throughout the program. (Spring)
THE RECREATION FOUNDATION OF BC SCHOLARSHIP recognizes the most outstanding graduate student in the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program, as chosen by Faculty. The recipient has excelled in the classroom and as a student intern, exhibited leadership skills in all aspects of the program, and demonstrated a commitment to the broad field of leisure service. (Spring)
WALUSHKA-WARWICK AMATEUR SPORTING SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a Recreation Leadership student who demonstrates the most interest and aptitude in working in the amateur sports area of recreation. The winner must be working part-time to help pay for their education, and have performed well in their internship. They must have also demonstrated a willingness to help out their fellow students during their studies in the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program. (Spring)
WILSHER PROGRAMMING SCHOLARSHIP is a scholarship for a third term student who works or volunteers while attending the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program and excels in recreation program design and implementation. The student must have demonstrated that they are working or volunteering a minimum of eight hours per week during the 1st and 2nd terms of the Diploma program. The student must have demonstrated exemplary leadership in RECR 1168, which is to be determined through faculty assessment of the following: student rating by team members of group participation; how students model task completion and support of team members; how the student motivates the group to have a quality special event. ZAMBONI CO. /CROCKER EQUIPMENT CO. LTD. SCHOLARSHIP is an award for a student registered in 3rd term of the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program who has demonstrated top academic standing in the first year of the program. (Fall)
