Department Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded for academic merit. In order for the competition for scholarships to be as equitable as possible, an applicant must meet certain eligibility conditions. Please check with the Financial Aid Department for these conditions. As well, scholarship recipients must satisfy any donor requirements and generally must be Canadian citizens, landed immigrants, or conventional refugees with proof of status.

Langara College scholarships include the following:

  • General Scholarships that are available to Langara College students currently registered in a minimum of 12 credits and who were registered in a minimum of 12 credits in one of the past two semesters. Applications may be required, and can be obtained from the Financial Aid Department.
  • Departmental Scholarships that are normally available to Langara College students registered in a minimum of 12 credits and who were registered in a minimum of 12 credits in one of the past two terms. (Exceptional circumstances may apply.) Students receive the recommendation of program faculty when they meet specific scholarship criteria. Please check with specific departments to see if an application is required.


ART HISTORY

ART HISTORY DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIP is awarded for excellence and outstanding achievement in Art History.  The award goes to a student who is currently enrolled and has completed three Art History courses with the highest GPA in those courses.  The student must intend on continuing studies in the Visual Arts. (Spring)

 

 

DESIGN FORMATION

BAKERS’ ASSOCIATION OF B.C. SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to students enrolled in the third term of the Design Formation Program who are deemed “most promising” based on their creative and academic achievement. (Fall)

BOB NEIGHBORS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who has completed the first year of the Design Formation Program with a high level of academic achievement in graphics.  The chosen recipient will be a student who freely shares their knowledge and abilities with others and supports their colleagues during their learning process. (Fall)

DESIGN FORMATION VISUAL PRESENTATION AWARD recognizes a student who is enrolled in the third term of the Design Formation Program.  The recipient must demonstrate a keen interest in the Visual Presentation Field, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 in DDSN 1152 and DDSN 1252. (Fall)

HERMAN ITZINGER BURSARY/ SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who has completed the first year of the Design Formation Program and is returning for second year. The student must demonstrate financial need and academic achievement, with a GPA of 3.0 in first year studio courses. (Fall)

MOLSON COORS CANADA SHOLARSHIP is awarded to the Design Formation Program student who achieves the highest combined grade point average in the first year of DSGN 1151, DSGN 1152, DSGN 1153, and DSGN 1154.  The recipient must also, in judgment of the faculty, demonstrate the highest level of creativity and commitment to these studios. (Fall)

RAJEAN C. SALMON SCHOLARSHIP goes to students registered in 3rd term of the Design Formation Program who demonstrate the highest level of creativity, commitment, and determination to succeed in the Design Formation Program. Student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in the first two terms of the program. (Fall)

XEROX CANADA LTD. SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a student enrolled in Journalism, Publishing, Design Formation, or Fine Arts.  The award is typically given out on a rotating basis, to a student enrolled in one of these programs.  The schedule is as follows: 2012- Journalism, 2013 - Design Formation, 2014 - Fine Arts, 2015 – Publishing. Please see below for specific criteria, depending on which department is awarding.

a) Journalism- awarded to a student enrolled in either the second year of the two year program or the second term of the one year program.  The student must demonstrate outstanding achievement, leadership, excellence in writing and, in particular, investigative reporting. 

b) Publishing- awarded to a student, who has completed two terms of the Publishing program and who has shown outstanding achievement and dedication to the program.

c) Design Formation- awarded to a student who has completed two terms of the Design Formation program and has shown outstanding achievement and dedication to the program. 

d) Fine Arts- awarded to a student who has completed two terms (minimum of 15 credits per term) of the Fine Arts program and who has shown outstanding achievement, professionalism and dedication to the advancement of the studio arts.

 

FILM ARTS

GEORGE BUSH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD recognizes an above average Film Arts student who is selected by a jury as “Best Director” of a graduation film from the “Production Practicum” course, FLMA 1282. (Summer)

TAMARAK FILMWORKS ARTS AWARD is awarded to a student for outstanding achievement in the "Unlock the Vault Film Festival". (Summer)

 

FINE ARTS

DAVID LAMBERT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to Fine Arts students who demonstrate outstanding achievement. The awards are:

1) The Avery Huyghe/Jack Diggle Memorial Award is for a 4th term Ceramics student who is eligible for the Graduating Exhibition, is judged to be the most outstanding in the area of Ceramics and shows the most promise.

2) The T. Kakinuma Memorial Award for a 4th term ceramics/sculpture student who is eligible for the Graduating Exhibition, is judged to be the most outstanding in the area of Ceramics/Sculpture and shows the most promise. (Spring)

3) The Bill Watson Memorial Award for a 4th term Printmaking student who is eligible for the Graduating Exhibition. The candidate is judged to be the most outstanding in the area of Printmaking and shows the most promise. (Spring)

GORDON CARUSO FINE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a graduating Fine Arts student for achievement in painting. The award goes to a student, who has “had a bit of a struggle and who is somewhat of a radical”. (Spring)

SCOTT PLEAR FIRST YEAR DRAWING SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to recognize a student who has consistently demonstrated outstanding drawing in a first year drawing course.  Any Langara College student (Career or Arts and Science) who has successfully completed a first-year drawing course (either FINA 1120 -Introduction to Drawing I or FINA 1220 -Introduction to Drawing II) is eligible.

JOURNALISM

B.C. JOURNALISTS’ LEGACY FUND recognizes a student enrolled full-time Journalism program who, during the past year, has written the best news story for The Voice. Student must be enrolled in the 2nd year of the Diploma program or 2nd term of the Certificate program.  The story must have demonstrated high reporting  standards including initiative, originality, sounds research, factual accuracy, fairness, and superior writing. (Spring)

JEANI READ-MICHAEL MERCER SCHOLARSHIP FOR JOURNALISM STUDENTS is awarded annually to two graduating Journalism diploma or certificate students.  The successful applicant will be required to produce a major work of journalism suitable for publication in a newspaper, magazine, broadcast, electronic, the web, or other media outlet.  The successful applicant must be currently enrolled in the Journalsim program and will be selected by a committee.  The award is designed to cover the cost of living, research, travel and other relevant expenses.  The project will be overseen by a relevant mentor, usually a senior journalist, who will guide the student's work and monitor his or her progress, with a project completion date of December 31st. The mentor will be available for approximately 20-25 hours over the duration of the project. (Spring)

JOURNALISM ETHICS SCHOLARSHIP is an award for a senior Journalism student who demonstrates the ability to handle ethically challenging situations while working on the Journalism Department newspaper, The Voice.  The decision is based on the students’ “ethical conundrum” paper in the Journalism Ethics course and on their performance as a reporter or editor on The Voice.  Student need not be currently enrolled, but must have been enrolled in the previous semester. (Summer)

LEON AND SIMMA HOLT JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP is for a full-time Journalism student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement, responsibility and integrity in Journalism, and respect for Journalistic accuracy, objectivity, research and honesty. (Spring)

PENNY WISE JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIPS There are three scholarships: 
1) An entrance scholarship for female students enrolled in the Journalism Certificate Program and recommended by BCYCNA and Journalism faculty. (Fall) 
2) An award for a returning 2nd term Certificate student who has demonstrated sound researching and reporting skills and shown exceptional promise as a journalist. (Spring) 
3) An Award for a returning 3rd term Diploma student who has demonstrated sound researching and reporting skills and has shown exceptional promise as a journalist. (Fall)

SCOTT SCHILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to the graduating Journalism student who demonstrated the highest proficiency in all subjects of the Journalism Program. (Fall)

XEROX CANADA LTD. SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a student enrolled in Journalism, Publishing, Design Formation, or Fine Arts.  The award is typically given out on a rotating basis, to a student enrolled in one of these programs.  The schedule is as follows: 2012- Journalism, 2013 - Design Formation, 2014 - Fine Arts, 2015 – Publishing. PHOTOGRAPHY

ALVIN SCHAFER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to the 4th term Professional Photo- Imaging student with the highest overall cumulative GPA in the first three terms of the program. (Spring)

EERO SORILA PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to recognize academic excellence. It is presented to the student with the highest grade point average (no less than 3.00) after completion of the first term of the Professional Photo Imaging Program. (Spring)

EVANGELOS (ANGIE) APOSTILIDES SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to Photo-Imaging students. They must have completed the second term and be enrolled in the third term of the Professional Photo-Imaging Program. Students must have achieved a grade of B or higher in BUSM 1115 (Entrepreneurship), be in the top 30% of the class, and must have shown leadership among his/her fellow students, or exhibited outstanding initiative or problem solving ability. (Fall)

HERB ADDINGTON MEMORIAL ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who has completed 1st year of the Professional Photo-Imaging Program and plans a career in professional photography. Students must be in the top 20% of the class and demonstrate previous or current community involvement. (Fall)

HENRY & ELAINE CHEN SCHOLARSHIP is awarded for achievement and community/charitable leadership by a Langara College Professional Photo-Imaging student.  The recipient must be registered full time in the 4th term of the program, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.  The recipient must also submit documentation in support of his/her participation in community or charitable activities. (Spring)

PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA SCHOLARSHIP awards a Professional Photo-Imaging Program student who demonstrates financial need and academic merit. He/she must have completed the second term of the program with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00, and be registered in third term. (Fall)

SCHIFFER MEMORIAL PRIZE IN PHOTOGRAPHY is awarded to a student in the 4th term of the Professional Photo-Imaging Program who has a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.33 and who has shown leadership among his/her fellow students. (Spring)

 

PUBLISHING

EDITORS’ ASSOCIATION OF CANADA/ASSOCIATION CANADIENNE DES REVISEURS, BC BRANCH SCHOLARSHIP goes to a Publishing: Techniques and Technologies student who has a minimum GPA of 3.5, and has achieved an “A” in PUBL 1115- Writing for Publication course. The recipient must also have demonstrated a strong interest in becoming an editor. (Spring)

PUBLISHING TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGY NEWSLETTER SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded from donations from sources who receive the services of the students in the Publishing Techniques and Technologies Program for the production of a newsletter. One award is for the best newsletter design and one is for the best editing of the newsletter.  Award availability depends on the availability of a donor/client for the newsletter. (Spring)

THEATRE ARTS

ANTONY HOLLAND SCHOLARSHIP is for students enrolled in the 2nd or 3rd year of the Theatre Arts Program at Langara College. The award goes to one or more students who demonstrate outstanding ability and dedication in the program. (Spring)

BETA SIGMA PHI, VANCOUVER SCHOLARSHIP is an award for a 3rd or 4th term Acting student or 2nd term Production student, who has demonstrated excellence in some area of the Theatre Arts Program. The recipient must maintain their registration in the program.  Students must submit a written application to the department indicating their reasons for needing scholarship assistance. (Fall)

DAVID PRITCHARD STAGE MANAGEMENT SCHOLARSHIP recognizes one student for outstanding achievement in stage management. (Spring) 

DAVID PRITCHARD THEATRE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP recognizes one student for outstanding achievement in all aspects of the Theatre Arts Program. (Spring)

EARL KLEIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is for a 4th, 5th or 6th term Theatre Arts student who demonstrated generosity with peers and a contribution to the ensemble.  The recipient must also display freedom of creative expression, interest in increasing knowledge in all aspects of theatre, commitment, determination, and financial need. (Fall)

GERTRUDE ANNE LANGRIDGE MEMORIAL THEATRE ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded to students enrolled in the Theatre Arts Program. One Scholarship is awarded to a second or third year acting student or a second year production student who has shown a strong and consistent contribution to the ensemble.  A second scholarship is awarded to a second or third year acting student who demonstrates outstanding ability in some aspect of the program.  Both award recipients are chosen by recommendation from the Theatre Arts Program faculty. (Fall)

JEAN MARGARET MONICA BALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP recognizes a 3rd, 4th, or 5th term acting student who has successfully completed first year, and has shown dedication to the Theatre Arts Program. Preference is given to a student who demonstrates strong ability in comedy. (Spring)

JENNIFER WADE FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP is for students in the final year of the Theatre Arts Program (either the Acting or Production Option) who have shown the most kindness and caring towards others during their final year in Theatre Arts. The award was established in the belief that a lasting drama or art of any kind is all about caring and concern that touches upon what is universal rather than what is parochial, trendy or shallow. (Spring)

JOHN F. PARKER SCHOLARSHIP FOR THEATRE ARTS is awarded to an Acting or Production student in the second or third term of the Studio 58 Theatre Arts program who demonstrates exceptional promise. (Fall)

LLOYD NICHOLSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to recognize outstanding musical achievement in Theatre Arts-Studio 58.  The recipient must be a second or third-year Theatre Arts-Studio 58 student who demonstrates outstanding musical ability. (Spring)

TOUCHSTONE THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP honours students registered in the 2nd year of the Theatre Arts Program who have shown exceptional progress in their work. (Fall)
