External Post-Secondary Bursaries

Langara College students may be eligible for external bursaries. Bursaries are awarded on the basis of financial need. The bursaries and scholarships that follow are listed and described in alphabetical order, under different target groups. Wherever possible, the eligibility criteria, deadlines and contacts names have been included in order to assist students apply for the awards.

Although these awards are not administered by Langara College, staff may be able to assist with questions. Students interested in applying for individual awards are responsible for contacting the awarding group directly. This list should not be regarded as an authoritative list of all the available external awards. Students are encouraged to refer to other listings and financial resources.

External Bursaries:

A bursary is a non-repayable award based on financial need. Academic standing is often also taken into account. The following is a list of external bursaries available to students. Most are open to all students in any program; some are restricted to students in specific programs, courses or terms of study. The information provided is intended for general reference only; it may be subject to change. Interested students are responsible for enquiring and applying through the appropriate agency as indicated in the description.

A) Bursaries for Students with Disabilities:

The following bursaries are intended for students with disabilities only.

B.C. Paraplegic Foundation Bursaries

The BC Paraplegic Association Foundation administers a number of bursaries to students with disabilities to encourage them to complete their educational or vocational goals.

  1. B.C. Paraplegic Foundation Bursary
    " This bursary is intended to enable students with a disability to pursue or continue a post-secondary education.
  2. BCPF South Asian Rehabilitation Club Bursaries
    These bursaries are offered through the British Columbia Paraplegic Association to students who have South Asian origin.
  3. Independent Order of the Daughter of the Empire Bursary for Physically Disabled Persons
    This award was established after Rick Hansen's World Tour and will be awarded to students at the post-secondary level. Monies are to be used to assist with expenses for tuition, textbooks, transportation or teaching assistance.
  4. Province of British Columbia's International Year of the Disabled Persons Bursaries
    In recognition of the International Year of the Disabled Persons, the Province of British Columbia has award a grant to the British Columbia Paraplegic Foundation to establish the B.C.I.D.P Bursaries.

Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division Lorne Fraser Educational Fund

This award is designed to encourage and enable people with metal illnesses to pursue goal oriented job skills/ training.

Criteria:

  1. Applicants must have a history of mental illness
  2. Currently participating in some form of therapeutic support
  3. Have an identified job goal
  4. Demonstrate a need for financial assistance

Judge Brian Stevenson Bursary Fund

This award is open to all youths who are Blind or Vision Impaired and who wish to continue in studies at the post-secondary level. Eligible candidates must be currently pursuing post-secondary studies and have strong career aspirations. Criteria:

  1. Applicants must be blind or visually impaired
  2. Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  3. Must be registered at a Canadian post-secondary education institution
  4. Academic merit
  5. Financial need

Lisa Huus Memorial Fund Bursary

This fund was established in 1988 in memory of Lisa Pauline Huus, in order to provide financial assistance to disabled persons to undertake or continue their post-secondary education.

  3. Must be enrolled in or plan to attend a B.C. post-secondary institution

Quota International District 11 Speech and Hearing Bursary

This bursary is available to assist a person with a communication disorder to receive instruction or a teacher who is willing to undertake the instruction of children with communication disorders or, assist a person to undertake professional training for work in the field of communication disorders. The program is focused on raising public awareness of the needs and goals of hearing and speech-impaired people.

Criteria:

  1. Applicants must have a speech or hearing disability
  2. Resident of B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba
  3. Must be enrolled in or plan to attend a post-secondary institution

Robinson and Buckland Memorial Bursary

This award provides financial assistance to legally blind students in order to encourage full-time post-secondary studies.

Criteria:

  1. Applicant must be legally blind
  2. Canadian citizen
  3. Enrolled full-time at a Canadian post-secondary institution

B) Bursaries for First Nations Students:

The following bursaries are intended for First Nations students only.

British Columbia Indian Arts and Welfare Society Memorial Bursary

This bursary has been established by the BC Indian Arts and Welfare Society in memory of those Indian Canadians who gave their lives in either World War.

Criteria:

  1. Applicants must be Aboriginal students from the province of BC
  2. Must be planning to enter one of the established universities, colleges, technical or vocational institution on a full-time basis

Clarence Ludwig Musclow Bursary

This bursary is offered to a British Columbian First Nations student studying First Nations culture, history, language or any other topic, which will help preserve the history and culture of First Nations people.

Criteria:

  1. Applicants must be Aboriginal students from the province of BC
  2. Must be studying First Nations culture, history, language or other topics at a BC post-secondary institution, that will preserve the history and culture of First Nations peoples
  3. Academic merit
  4. Financial need

Educational Awards Program For Native People

Four bursaries of $3,000 each are made available each year in order to encourage Aboriginal individuals to pursue advanced education. Most programs leading to a degree or diploma at recognized Canadian universities, technical institutes or community colleges are eligible. However, emphasis is placed on those programs that prepare students for a career in the oil and gas industry. Preference will be given to applicants who have been admitted into post-secondary programs.

Criteria:

  1. Inuit, Métis, Status Indian or Non-Status Indian in need of financial assistance.
  2. Has resided in British Columbia, Alberta or Saskatchewan for at least one year immediately before applying for the award.
  3. Demonstrates serious interest in preparing for a career in the oil and gas industry.

First Citizens' Fund - Student Bursary Program

These awards were established to assist Aboriginal students pursue post-secondary studies at a British Columbia college, university, technical or vocational institution.

Criteria:

  1. Must be an Aboriginal student
  2. BC resident for 6 months or more prior to application
  3. Attending a recognized BC post-secondary institution in a minimum two-year academic program on a full-time basis
  4. Minimum 2.5 GPA

First Nations Health Careers Bursary

The Urban Native Indian education Society offers bursaries to assist and encourage First Nations people in studies in the health care profession.

Criteria:

  1. Must be a member of First Nations
  2. Mist be enrolled in health care related studies

Health Sciences Association of BC

This bursary is open to Aboriginal students who are continuing or proceeding in any Health Sciences Society (HAS) field leading to a recognized degree or diploma at any Canadian college, university or other post-secondary institution.

Criteria:

  1. Applicants must of First Nations ancestry
  2. Must be enrolled full-time in a Canadian post-secondary institution relevant to any HAS field
  3. Academic merit

Wilson Duff Memorial Bursary

One or more bursaries are available to students in the field of Indian history and culture with preference given to students of native Indian ancestry.

Criteria:

  1. Applicants must be registered full-time at a BC post-secondary institution
  2. Open to students studying Indian history and culture
  3. Academic merit

The following bursaries are to the general student population. Each has its own eligibility criteria.

British Columbia Lung Association Bursary

The British Columbia Lung Association offers bursaries to students who have had tuberculosis to encourage them to pursue a post-secondary education.

Criteria:

British Columbia Nurses Education Bursary

These awards have been established to assist currently trained Registered Nurses (RN's), Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN's), and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's) upgrade their skills or who require further education to work in BC's Health Care System.

Criteria:

  1. Must be enrolled in an eligible nursing program of study at least 4 months of study in length at a BC public post-secondary school leading to a certificate, degree or diploma
  2. Demonstrate financial need
  3. Not in default of BC student loan
  4. Been a permanent resident of BC for the last 12 months
  5. Worked for an employer who is funded by the Ministry of Health, for at least 12 months in the last 4 years prior to the bursary period.
  6. Must have worked in a position funded by the Ministry of Health prior to the creation of the Ministry of Children and Families for at least 12 months in the last 4 years prior to the bursary period.

B.C. Press Council/B.C. & Yukon Community Newspaper Association Essay Award

This award was established to encourage young British Columbians to think about
the press and the important role that journalism plays in a free democratic
society. Prizes are awarded to the best essays submitted by both secondary and
post-secondary students in the province.

Criteria:

  1. Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  2. Resident of BC
  3. Must be a student at a BC post-secondary institution
  4. Applicants must submit a typed 2500 word, double spaced essay on a specific topic

British Columbia Women's Institute 1971 Centennial Vocational Bursary

This award was established by the British Columbia Women's Institute in order to assist Institute members and their children pursue an academic, technical or vocational education.

Criteria:

  1. Must be BC Women's Institute member in good standing
  2. Must be registered in a recognized vocational or training school (including arts, crafts or correspondence) anywhere in Canada
  3. Academic merit

This award has been established by the Canadian Federation of University Women to enable women residing in South Delta to attend or continue a post-secondary education. Criteria:

  3. Twenty years of age or older
  4. Applicants must be registered or planning to register at a post-secondary institution

Coquitlam Foundation Bursaries

These awards have been established by the city of Coquitlam in order to enable residents to pursue or continue a post-secondary education. Criteria:

  1. The applicant must be a resident of the City of Coquitlam,
  2. Must demonstrate financial need
  3. Applicants must have a history of school and/or community involvement, showing that he or she can successfully undertake a program of studies,
  4. Must attend an interview with the selection committee and begin designated studies within six months of formal notification of selection.
  5. Applications must include a letter of application, which should include a statement outlining why the applicant merits the award, a resume, copy of appropriate school transcripts, a personal statement outlining financial need and two letters of reference which address the student's ability to complete the course of studies proposed.

Credit Union Foundation of British Columbia

Founded by and funded by credit union members, CUFBC awards are made available to B.C. resident students who are in financial need to complete their post-secondary education. Award amounts vary from $500 to $3000.

Lotus Light Charity Society

Any student who is 17 years or older and will be beginning or continuing their studies at a recognized post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis may be eligible to receive a $300 scholarship to assist in those studies.  Applicants will be assessed on scholastic record and community involvement.

PLEASE NOTE:  Students who have completed or are in their final years of studies at the closing date of the application period are not eligible. All applications must be submitted via postal mail (i.e., no email submissions, no fax submissions), addressed as follows:

  1. Recent official transcript of grades
  2. Proof of acceptance for entry to recognized post-secondary educational institution.
  3. Resume containing information regarding education, work, and volunteer experience.
  4. Current letters of reference from previous employers, teachers, or volunteer organizations.
  5. Telephone number and email address where you can be reached.

Deadline: Application submission for the 2009 period is March 1 to May15; successful applicants will be notified before June 15.

Pacific Coast Fishermen's Mutual Marine Insurance Company Bursaries

Bursaries are available to children and legal wards of past or present members of the Pacific Coast Fishermen's Mutual Marine Insurance Company in order to encourage post-secondary educational training. Criteria:

  1. Must be children or wards of current or past members of the Pacific Coast Fishermen's Mutual Marine Insurance Company

Piolat Foundation Bursary

La Fondation Andre Piolat offers a bursary for students who are pursuing training in any of the fine arts and who use French as a means of communication, whether natively or after studying the language. Criteria:

  1. Must use French as a means of communication, whether natively or after studying the language, pursuing training in any of the fine arts
  2. A letter in French outlining educational objectives and explaining the extent to which the use of French is a part of the student's personal and professional life
  3. Documentation of academic and artistic achievements
  4. Two letters of reference

Public Guardian and Trustee Educational Assistance Fund

The Public Guardian and Trustee Educational Assistance Fund bursaries are awarded annually in conjunction with the Ministry for Children and Families to high school graduates 19 and older pursuing a post-secondary academic, technical or vocational program. These bursaries assist recipients to further their academic goals by supplementing their existing funding. Applicants must have other sources of funding.

Criteria:

  1. Must be a former ward, or in continuing custody of the Ministry of Social Services or its successor, the Ministry of Children and Families, under the Child, Family and Community Services Act or predecessor laws.
  2. Must be at least 19 years of age the date studies commence
  3. At least a high school graduate or equivalent currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary academic, technical, or vocational program
  4. Must have other means of funding for the educational year

These awards have been established to provide bursaries to basic nursing students and RN's enrolled in post-basic nursing education programs.

Retail Wholesale Union, Local 517 Bursary

This scholarship is offered to dependents or legal wards of members of Local 517. The award is intended to enable family members of the Union pursue a post-secondary education. It is open in competition to applicants who are proceeding from Grade XII to any accredited University or College in British Columbia.

Criteria:

  1. Applicants must be dependents or legal wards of members of the Retail Wholesale Union Local 517
  2. Must be proceeding from Grade XII to any accredited university or college in BC

Royal Arch Bursary

Several bursaries have been established by the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons to give financial assistance to the children and grandchildren of members in good standing in order to pursue or continue their post-secondary education. Criteria:

Royal Canadian Legion Pacific Command Award

The Royal Canadian Legion Pacific Command provides bursaries to deserving students who achieve satisfactory performance and who wish to continue studies at a post-secondary institution in British Columbia. Awards are for B.C. studies only, unless the courses required are not available in B.C. Priority is given to children and grandchildren of veterans and ex-service personnel. Criteria:

St. John Ambulance provides bursaries to nursing students in order to assist them begin or continue their studies. Criteria:

  1. Awarded to nursing students in the diploma, baccalaureate and graduate programs

Tim Armstrong Memorial Bursary in Agriculture and Journalism

In memory of Tim Armstrong's outstanding contribution to British Columbia journalism and the agricultural industry, these awards are open to all students enrolled in a full program of studies in agriculture or journalism.

Criteria:

  1. Financial need
  2. Academic merit
  3. Must be enrolled in the second year or higher of a full-time agriculture or journalism program at a recognized BC or other provincial college or university
