External Post-Secondary Bursaries
Langara College students may be eligible for external bursaries. Bursaries are awarded on the basis of financial need. The bursaries and scholarships that follow are listed and described in alphabetical order, under different target groups. Wherever possible, the eligibility criteria, deadlines and contacts names have been included in order to assist students apply for the awards.

Although these awards are not administered by Langara College, staff may be able to assist with questions. Students interested in applying for individual awards are responsible for contacting the awarding group directly. This list should not be regarded as an authoritative list of all the available external awards. Students are encouraged to refer to other listings and financial resources.
External Bursaries:
A bursary is a non-repayable award based on financial need. Academic standing is often also taken into account. The following is a list of external bursaries available to students. Most are open to all students in any program; some are restricted to students in specific programs, courses or terms of study. The information provided is intended for general reference only; it may be subject to change. Interested students are responsible for enquiring and applying through the appropriate agency as indicated in the description.

B.C. Paraplegic Foundation Bursaries
The BC Paraplegic Association Foundation administers a number of bursaries to students with disabilities to encourage them to complete their educational or vocational goals.

" This bursary is intended to enable students with a disability to pursue or continue a post-secondary education. - BCPF South Asian Rehabilitation Club Bursaries
These bursaries are offered through the British Columbia Paraplegic Association to students who have South Asian origin. - Independent Order of the Daughter of the Empire Bursary for Physically Disabled Persons
This award was established after Rick Hansen's World Tour and will be awarded to students at the post-secondary level. Monies are to be used to assist with expenses for tuition, textbooks, transportation or teaching assistance. - Province of British Columbia's International Year of the Disabled Persons Bursaries
In recognition of the International Year of the Disabled Persons, the Province of British Columbia has award a grant to the British Columbia Paraplegic Foundation to establish the B.C.I.D.P Bursaries.

This award is designed to encourage and enable people with metal illnesses to pursue goal oriented job skills/ training.
Criteria:
- Applicants must have a history of mental illness
- Currently participating in some form of therapeutic support

Judge Brian Stevenson Bursary Fund
This award is open to all youths who are Blind or Vision Impaired and who wish to continue in studies at the post-secondary level. Eligible candidates must be currently pursuing post-secondary studies and have strong career aspirations. Criteria:

This bursary is available to assist a person with a communication disorder to receive instruction or a teacher who is willing to undertake the instruction of children with communication disorders or, assist a person to undertake professional training for work in the field of communication disorders. The program is focused on raising public awareness of the needs and goals of hearing and speech-impaired people.

B) Bursaries for First Nations Students:
The following bursaries are intended for First Nations students only.
British Columbia Indian Arts and Welfare Society Memorial Bursary
This bursary has been established by the BC Indian Arts and Welfare Society in memory of those Indian Canadians who gave their lives in either World War.
Criteria:

This bursary is offered to a British Columbian First Nations student studying First Nations culture, history, language or any other topic, which will help preserve the history and culture of First Nations people.

Educational Awards Program For Native People
Four bursaries of $3,000 each are made available each year in order to encourage Aboriginal individuals to pursue advanced education. Most programs leading to a degree or diploma at recognized Canadian universities, technical institutes or community colleges are eligible. However, emphasis is placed on those programs that prepare students for a career in the oil and gas industry. Preference will be given to applicants who have been admitted into post-secondary programs.
Criteria:
- Inuit, Métis, Status Indian or Non-Status Indian in need of financial assistance.
- Has resided in British Columbia, Alberta or Saskatchewan for at least one year immediately before applying for the award.
- Demonstrates serious interest in preparing for a career in the oil and gas industry.

These awards were established to assist Aboriginal students pursue post-secondary studies at a British Columbia college, university, technical or vocational institution.

The British Columbia Lung Association offers bursaries to students who have had tuberculosis to encourage them to pursue a post-secondary education.

British Columbia Nurses Education Bursary
These awards have been established to assist currently trained Registered Nurses (RN's), Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN's), and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's) upgrade their skills or who require further education to work in BC's Health Care System.
Criteria:
- Must be enrolled in an eligible nursing program of study at least 4 months of study in length at a BC public post-secondary school leading to a certificate, degree or diploma
- Demonstrate financial need
- Not in default of BC student loan
- Been a permanent resident of BC for the last 12 months
- Worked for an employer who is funded by the Ministry of Health, for at least 12 months in the last 4 years prior to the bursary period.
- Must have worked in a position funded by the Ministry of Health prior to the creation of the Ministry of Children and Families for at least 12 months in the last 4 years prior to the bursary period.

This award was established to encourage young British Columbians to think about
the press and the important role that journalism plays in a free democratic
society. Prizes are awarded to the best essays submitted by both secondary and
post-secondary students in the province.

Coquitlam Foundation Bursaries
These awards have been established by the city of Coquitlam in order to enable residents to pursue or continue a post-secondary education. Criteria:
- The applicant must be a resident of the City of Coquitlam,
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Applicants must have a history of school and/or community involvement, showing that he or she can successfully undertake a program of studies,
- Must attend an interview with the selection committee and begin designated studies within six months of formal notification of selection.
- Applications must include a letter of application, which should include a statement outlining why the applicant merits the award, a resume, copy of appropriate school transcripts, a personal statement outlining financial need and two letters of reference which address the student's ability to complete the course of studies proposed.

Lotus Light Charity Society
Any student who is 17 years or older and will be beginning or continuing their studies at a recognized post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis may be eligible to receive a $300 scholarship to assist in those studies. Applicants will be assessed on scholastic record and community involvement.
PLEASE NOTE: Students who have completed or are in their final years of studies at the closing date of the application period are not eligible. All applications must be submitted via postal mail (i.e., no email submissions, no fax submissions), addressed as follows:

Piolat Foundation Bursary
La Fondation Andre Piolat offers a bursary for students who are pursuing training in any of the fine arts and who use French as a means of communication, whether natively or after studying the language. Criteria:

Public Guardian and Trustee Educational Assistance Fund
The Public Guardian and Trustee Educational Assistance Fund bursaries are awarded annually in conjunction with the Ministry for Children and Families to high school graduates 19 and older pursuing a post-secondary academic, technical or vocational program. These bursaries assist recipients to further their academic goals by supplementing their existing funding. Applicants must have other sources of funding.
Criteria:
- Must be a former ward, or in continuing custody of the Ministry of Social Services or its successor, the Ministry of Children and Families, under the Child, Family and Community Services Act or predecessor laws.
- Must be at least 19 years of age the date studies commence
- At least a high school graduate or equivalent currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary academic, technical, or vocational program
- Must have other means of funding for the educational year
