University Entrance Awards

These awards are administered by each institution in recognition of the exceptional academic and community achievements of students intending to transfer from Langara College into British Columbia's university accredited institutions (British Columbia Institute of Technology, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria). For complete descriptions or further information please refer to the institutional awards brochure or most recent university calendar.

British Columbia Institute of Technology

Numerous entrance awards are available for students entering the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). Some awards are available to all students. Most are restricted to students in specific programs, courses or terms of study. Students entering a full-time program who wish to apply for any of the awards must submit a BCIT Entrance Award application form available from the Financial Aid and Awards Office at BCIT.

NOTE: The following list is subject to change.

  1. President's Entrance Award Program
    Up to sixty awards are available to students entering BCIT directly.
  2. BCIT Alumni Association Entrance Awards"
    An endowment has been created by the BCIT Alumni Association to provide entrance awards to students entering BCIT full-time.
  3. The Simons Foundation Entrance Awards for Women
    An endowment established by the Simons Foundation provides an entrance scholarship for each female student entering a technology program at BCIT.
  4. BCIT Board of Governors Entrance Awards for Bachelor of Technology
    Up to six entrance awards will be presented each year to students entering a BCIT Bachelor of Technology degree program.
  5. BCIT December 6 Memorial Award for Women in Engineering
    BCIT has established an awards program for female students enrolled in technology programs at BCIT in memory of the 14 women killed at the L' Ecole Polytechnique in 1989.
  6. BCIT Food Technology Entrance Award
    This award is presented to a student entering the Food Technology program.
  7. CKNW/ CFMI Entrance Awards
    Two entrance awards are available to full-time students entering the Broadcast and Media Communications, Journalism and Radio programs at BCIT.
  8. Forest Renewal BC Entrance Awards
    Up to six Entrance awards are available to students entering the Chemical Sciences diploma program who plan to proceed into second year Pulp and Paper Technology.
  9. Alan G. Goodbrand Memorial Entrance Award
    Two Entrance Awards will be presented to students entering the Civil and Structural Engineering Program.
  10. Workers Compensation Board of BC Entrance Awards
    Entrance awards are available to students entering the Occupational Health and Safety Program at BCIT.

Criteria: (Although specific awards may have particular requirements, the following is a list of the general pre-requisites needed to be considered eligible for an entrance award at BCIT)

  1. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  2. Enrolled full-time in a BCIT program

Deadlines: August 5th for students entering a program in April to November
January 6th for students entering a program in December to May

Simon Fraser University

Simon Fraser University Entrance scholarships are for students of academic excellence who intend to transfer from colleges and other institutions to Simon Fraser University. The awards are adjudicated by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee and are administered by the Financial Aid and Awards Office.

NOTE: The following list is subject to change. Please contact the Financial Aid and Awards Office for more detailed information.

  1. The Honourable William M. Hamilton Scholarship
    This award recognizes high academic achievement and leadership potential.
  2. Ken Caple Scholarships
    These awards recognize outstanding academic performance.
  3. Dean's Scholarships
    These scholarships are awarded within each of the faculties of Applied Science, Arts, Business Administration, Education and Science in recognition of academic promise in a particular area of study.
  4. Scholarships for Continuing Students
    Many different scholarships and awards have been made possible by generous donations and are available to continuing students at Simon Fraser University.
  5. Open Undergraduate Scholarships
    These awards recognize and support undergraduate students who exhibit high academic merit and are open to students on a semester by semester basis.
Criteria:
  1. All applicants must have high academic standing
  2. Must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents

Deadlines: April for Summer (May) or Fall (September) semester
October for Spring (January)

University of British Columbia

UBC is able to offer a limited number of entrance awards to students with financial need entering the university from other post-secondary schools. The following awards provide support to students who are admissible to UBC, but who may be unable to attend the university without assistance. Please note the awards are awarded on a competitive basis through adjudication by an academic committee comprising of representatives of each of the major faculties that admit students from other schools.

  1. Chancellor's Entrance Scholarships
  2. Charles and Jane Banks Entrance Scholarships
  3. Norman MacKenzie College Scholarships
  4. John B. MacDonald Alumni Bursaries
Criteria:
  1. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  2. Scholastic performance
  3. Student participation and performance in community and/or school activities

The University of Victoria

The University of Victoria offers several entrance scholarships to students of exceptional academic merit transferring from regional British Columbia colleges. The Senate Committee on Awards administers all the undergraduate awards adjudicated by the University of Victoria. The following list of awards is open to most transferring students; however, some have specific requirements; for complete details, please refer to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Department at the University of Victoria. Students entering the University of Victoria who wish to apply for any of the awards must submit an Entrance Award application form available from the Student Awards and Financial Aid office.

NOTE: The following list is subject to change.

  1. The David Brousson Entrance Scholarship
    One scholarship is awarded to a student with high academic standing who is entering the University of Victoria directly from a BC regional college.
  2. Faculty of Engineering Dean's Entrance Scholarship
  3. A number of scholarships will be awarded annually to students with high academic merit entering the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Victoria directly from BC regional colleges.
  4. The Evelyn Marchant MacLaurin Memorial Scholarship in Music
    One or more scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding students pursuing a degree in music at the University of Victoria.
  5. John Locke Malkin Entrance Scholarships
    Up to six awards are made annually to students of exceptional academic promise entering the University of Victoria from a BC regional college.
  6. T.S. McPherson Entrance Scholarship
    Up to ten renewable scholarships are awarded annually to students of exceptional promise entering the University of Victoria directly from BC regional colleges.
  7. The 25TH Olympiad Scholarship
    A scholarship is awarded annually to a student from a BC regional college demonstrating a record of outstanding athletic achievement while also maintaining a high academic standing.
  8. President's Regional Entrance Scholarships
    Four scholarships are awarded within each college region of British Columbia students with high academic standing and broad interests who are entering the University of Victoria directly from BC regional colleges.
  9. The Ian and Gillian Stewart Entrance Scholarship
    A scholarship is awarded to a student with high academic standing entering the University of Victoria directly from a BC regional college
  10. R. B. Wilson Entrance Scholarship
    One or more scholarships are awarded annually to students entering the University of Victoria from BC regional colleges.
  11. University of Victoria Entrance Scholarships
    Up to sixty scholarships are awarded to students with high academic standing who are entering the University of Victoria directly from BC regional colleges.
Criteria:
  1. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  2. Must have high academic standing (preference will be given to candidates enrolled in full course loads).

Deadlines: February 28
