A scholarship is a non-repayable award, given in recognition of outstanding academic achievement. Scholarships are competitive and some may have additional eligibility requirements. Most of the following external scholarships are open to all students; some are restricted to students in specific programs, courses or terms of study. The information provided is intended for general reference only; it may be subject to change. Interested students, with few exceptions, are responsible for inquiring and applying through the appropriate agency as indicated in the description.
A) Scholarships for Single Parents:

The OnlineColleges.org Support a Student Scholarship for Single Parents
Available to a single parent who is enrolled in an accredited online post-secondary institution. A $10 000 Scholarship will be awarded to help pay for non-tuition related living expenses for the 2012 academic year that are not covered by the recipient's current financial aid, such as: Rent, childcare, books, supplies, utilities and groceries.
Criteria:
- Attending an accredited post-secondary institution
- Participating in an online degree program or a campus-based degree program with a significant online component to it (such as online lectures or quizzes)
- Receiving some type of financial aid
- A single parent

These scholarships and bursaries are available to members of the B.C. Paraplegic Association who have a physical disability. The decisions for allocating Scholarships and Bursaries are based on criteria set forth by the donators of the awards.

This scholarship will be awarded to students with who have the potential to be financially independent and enjoy a meaningful life and/or who are promising students pursuing an academic or vocational education. - B.C.P.F. (British Columbia Paraplegic Foundation) Scholarship Program
This scholarship has been established to the BCPF to assist students with a significant degree of disability. - John MacNeal, Scholarship, The
This award is named after John MacNeal who was paralyzed in 1953 when injured in a logging accident. He has generously donated funds to establish an annual scholarship presented to students with a disability to encourage them to continue their education. - Don Vaux Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Non Vaux, who worked for the BCPA as a Rehabilitation Counselor. The scholarship is awarded to a student with a disability to further their academic or vocational training and is to be used specifically for tuition, tools, equipment or books. - Douglas John Wilson Scholarship
This scholarship was established in January 1991, in memory of Doug Wilson, developing many rehabilitation programs that are followed today. It will be awarded to an individual beginning or continuing studies towards a degree in rehabilitation counseling in order to assist with tuition, textbooks, transportation or other educational expenses.

Lotus Light Charity Society
Any student who is 17 years or older and will be beginning or continuing their studies at a recognized post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis may be eligible to receive a scholarship to assist in those studies. Applicants will be assessed on scholastic record and community involvement.
PLEASE NOTE: Students who have completed or are in their final years of studies at the closing date of the application period are not eligible. Application submission for the 2011 period is March 1 to May 15; successful applicants will be notified later.

Aboriginal Veterans Scholarship Fund
Available to Aboriginal post-secondary education students, including Status and Non-Status Indians, Inuit and Metis. Preference may be given to descendants of Aboriginal veterans. The scholarships are available to students enrolled as full or part-time students in post-secondary programs of two or more academic years. To assist with private instruction, attending special seminars, educational events, tuition and expenses related to the applicant's education, including art supplies, costumes and equipment. The focus is on young people, but all ages are encouraged to apply.

Two scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded to nurses of Aboriginal ancestry who intend to serve in isolated northern Aboriginal communities, encouraging them to obtain the specialized knowledge they will require.
Criteria:
- Aboriginal ancestry.
- Intend to serve in the North.
- Within 10 months of completing the program of study, the successful applicant must obtain employment in an isolated northern Aboriginal community or provide documentation that he or she has made a reasonable effort to do so.

Broadcasters of the Future Awards: Aboriginal Peoples' Internship Award
The CanWest Global System Broadcasters of the Future Awards are a series of scholarship, internship and mentorship programs designed to encourage and aid talented and enthusiastic Canadians in establishing or furthering careers in the Canadian broadcast industry. The award recipient is placed in a four-month internship program at either the Global Television Network in Don Mills (Toronto), Ontario, or STV-Regina in Regina, Saskatchewan, where the recipient will be paid on a salary basis for the summer.
Criteria:
- Applicants must be Aboriginal Canadian
- Minimum secondary school graduate
- Interest in, and aptitude for, a career in the broadcasting industry
- Strong English language communications skills.
- One-page typewritten statement, 500 words or less, outlining applicant's educational and career goals.

Gil Purcell Memorial Journalism Scholarship for Native Canadians
This award was established in 1990 in honour of Gillis Purcell, general manager of The Canadian Press, the national news agency, from 1945 to 1969 in order to encourage native Canadians to study journalism at a Canadian institution and eventually enter the field of journalism in Canada.
Criteria:
- Awarded to a Native Canadian (status or non-status Indian, Metis or Inuit)
- Must be studying journalism at a Canadian university or community college, or who is actively involved in a university or college student newspaper.
- Open to both French and English-speaking native Canadians.

The awards listed below have been established by the Assembly of First Nations Resource Centre in order to assist Aboriginal Canadians to attend a Canadian post-secondary institution.

This award is for First Nations students in a criminology program. - Omer Peters Award

Imperial Oil Native Educational Awards Program
Imperial Oil Limited (Imperial) offers a number of educational awards (maximum four) each year to people of Native ancestry entering post-secondary studies. The purpose of the awards program is to encourage and assist people of Native ancestry to pursue undergraduate post-secondary educational studies in disciplines relevant to the petroleum industry.
Criteria:
- Native ancestry (Indian status and non-status, Inuit, or Metis)
- Resident of BC, Alta, Sask, NWT, or YT for at least one year immediately prior to applying for the award
- Proof of acceptance into a program leading to a degree, diploma or certificate
- Attending a university, college or technical institute in BC Alta, Sask, NWT or YT

The Jim Bourque Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a Canadian aboriginal student who intends to take or is enrolled in post-secondary training in Education, Environmental Studies, Traditional Knowledge or Telecommunications in order to encourage their studies. It is open to mature students and matriculating students.
Criteria:
- Must be an Aboriginal student (Inuit, Status Indian, Non-Status Indian or Métis)
- Canadian citizen
- Financial need.
- Good academic standing.
- Applicants must submit, in 500 words or less, a description of their intended program of study and the reasons for their choice of program.

Royal Bank Native Student Awards
This program recognizes enthusiasm for learning and helps First Nations people attend Canadian university or college programs relevant to the banking industry.
Criteria:
- Status Indian, Non-Status Indian, Inuit or Métis.
- Permanent resident/citizen of Canada.
- Has been accepted or is attending a university or college listed in the Directory of Canadian Universities in a discipline relevant to the Financial Services Industry. Examples include:

The Sahtu Renewable Resources Board Scholarship/ Bursary
The Sahtu Renewable Resources Board offers a scholarship/bursary program for NWT students wishing to pursue careers in the wildlife or forestry management fields.
Criteria:
- Pursuing a college diploma or university degree or minimum two years certificate program in renewable resources or a related field (biology, forestry, environmental services).
- Priority given to a Sahtu Dene or Metis enrolled under the land claim or to a NWT resident who has completed in the last two years of their high school education in the Sahtu Settlement Area.

Shoppers Drug Mart Scholarship, The
This award is offered to students of Inuit, Metis, status and non-status First Nations background from every region of Canada who are currently pursuing post-secondary studies. The scholarship is intended for Aboriginal students enrolled in any field and level of study.

Weyerhaeuser Canada Diversity Education Awards
Weyerhaeuser Canada BC Division makes awards available to aboriginals, women, visible minorities or persons with disabilities enrolled in a college diploma that is relevant to a career represented in Weyerhaeuser Canada.
Criteria:

This award is given to a fine arts student from the Squamish Nation who demonstrates community involvement and high scholastic achievement in memory of Xats'alanexw Siyaam, a respected leader of the Squamish Nation.

Xerox Aboriginal Scholarships and Internships Programs
The Xerox Aboriginal Scholarships and Internships encourage information technology literacy among Aboriginal men and women so they will be able to participate in Canada's economic prosperity as we move toward 2000. Xerox hopes to increase the number of Aboriginals employed in the information technology industry and in Xerox specifically.
Criteria:

The association Professional Biologists offers a scholarship to students who are the sons or daughters of a Registered Professional Biologist, and who is entering the third or fourth year of a program leading to a degree in Biology.

Bridget Walsh Scholarship
The Bridget Walsh Scholarship was created from the royalties of Sheelagh Conway's book The Faraway Hills Are Green: Voices of Irish Women in Canada. In recognition of the Canadian women whose stories are told in the book, Ms Conway donates half the royalties to low-income, single-parent, Irish women in Canada wishing to pursue a university or college education.

This fund has been established in order to help health care workers retrain and upgrade their skills, and keep pace with changing technology and preventative care needs.

Available to all registered amateur soccer players in British Columbia. Applications available from District Chairpersons. Canadian Printing Industries Scholarship Trust Fund
Several scholarships have been established by the Canadian Printing Industry Association to enable students interested in pursuing a career in the printing industries (this includes pre-press, press, sales, management, estimating, etc.) continue their education. These scholarships are not available to students enrolled in design or art courses. The eligibility of any particular institution is at the discretion of the board of trustees of the scholarship fund, whose decision is final. Part-time students and students interested in careers in design or art are not eligible for scholarships

Coquitlam Foundation Scholarships
Several scholarships have been established by the city of Coquitlam in order to enable their residents to pursue or continue a post-secondary education.
Criteria:
- The applicant must be a resident of the City of Coquitlam,
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Applicants must have a history of school and/or community involvement, showing that he or she can successfully undertake a program of studies,
- Must attend an interview with the selection committee and begin designated studies within six months of formal notification of selection.
- Applications must include a letter of application, which should include a statement outlining why the applicant merits the award, a resume, copy of appropriate school transcripts, a personal statement outlining financial need and two letters of reference which address the student's ability to complete the course of studies proposed.

Garfield Weston Merit Scholarships for Colleges (GWMSC)
Supports students who combine academic promise with character, leadership potential, and commitment to their community.
Criteria:
Open to Canadian citizens or landed immigrants. These awards are for college-bound students, who will be studying in programs that are 2-4 years in length. Geomatics Canada Scholarship Program
Geomatics is defined as a field of activities, which, using a systemic approach, integrates all the means used to acquire and manage spatial data required as part of scientific, administrative, legal and technical operations involved in the process of the production and management of spatial information. This scholarship program was established through Natural Resources Canada and Geomatics Canada to assist students enrolled in a post-secondary institution in the field of geomatics.

Hans Klinkenberg Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Harry Jerome Scholarships are given to Black students attending a college or university in Canada in order to nurture academic excellence among Black youth.

Honey Hooser Scholarship
The City of Surrey has established a scholarship to be awarded to a student who has an interest in arts or crafts. The interest may be interpreted in a broad fashion, including: the study of the arts, visual graphic or performing arts, or the development of tools to make these possible.

Ike Barber Scholarships
The Ike Barber Transfer Scholarship is open to students who, after completing two years of study at a BC public post-secondary institution, choose to transfer their credits into full-time studies at another public post-secondary institution in BC to complete their degree.
Successful applicants demonstrate academic merit as well as significant involvement in their community and/or school.
Criteria:
For the Ike Barber Transfer scholarships, a student is considered to be transferring if:
- They have accumulated at least 54 credits in transferable courses at a B.C. public college, and
Are enrolled at another B.C. public post-secondary institution that will confer the degree for the program when all remaining requirements are completed.
Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to students who:
- Are Canadian citizens, permanent residents (landed immigrants), convention refugees or protected people living in Canada as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
- Are residents of B.C., defined as having your primary residency at an address in the province for at least the past 12 months.
- Have recently completed or are completing the equivalent of two years of full-time study in transferable courses at an eligible sending institution, and are beginning studies at their receiving institution in 2012 or January 2013. Two years is defined as successful completion of at least 54 credits, or equivalent, in transferable courses; information on transferability of credits is available online through the BC Transfer Guide. Credits cannot be transferred from a completed 3 or 4 year degree.
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least B+ or equivalent for the 54 transferable credits completed, regardless of whether the particular credits transfer into their specific program. Scholarship awards will be contingent upon confirmation of final grades. (If you are unsure of the equivalent of a B+ at your institution, please contact your financial awards office.)
- Have demonstrated significant community and/or school involvement, supported by letters of reference submitted with the application.
Successful applicants will receive the award once the Scholarship Society has confirmed with the institution that the student is studying full time in the program that was stated in the students application. Full-time study is defined as 60% of a full course load.
Students who take time off in between study at their sending and receiving institutions are not eligible for the award, unless the student is able to provide proof of extenuating circumstances (e.g. medical).

One World Scholarship Program/Pacific Horizons Scholarship
Program allow eligible B.C. students pursuing part of their post-secondary studies, to have co-op experiences, internships, and other approved experiential learning activities overseas.
Criteria:
- One World Scholarships allow students to study or work abroad for a period of three weeks to one year. The experience must be a formal part of students' credential program or carry academic credit that is recognized by a student's post-secondary school.
- Pacific Horizons Scholarships allow students to leave Canada (but not to the U.S.) to have a cultural learning experience or to learn or practice a language for a time period of between three weeks and one year. The experience is not required to be an integral part of the credential to which the student is aspiring.
- For these programs, students cannot study or work in a country from which they immigrated within the past ten years.

The Soroptimist Foundation was established in 1958 and the Soroptimist Foundation of Canada formed in 1964 by Soroptimist International of the Americas. Vancouver Cantonese Opera Scholarship Award
The purpose of these awards is to provide an opportunity for Canadian youth to know more about traditional Cantonese opera, and to nurture Cantonese opera in Canada. The Vancouver Cantonese Opera is a non-profit organization.
