Frequently Asked Questions

1)      Please clarify “Resident of British Columbia”:

  • Out of province students (Canadian citizen/landed immigrant status or permanent residence in Canada) that have now resided in BC since enrolment into their current programs are eligible (as per BC Gaming Branch rules).
  • The recipient of the Education Award must be a RESIDENT in British Columbia at the time the monies are awarded and during the tenure of the award.

2)      What is required as proof of registration in a BC post-secondary institution?

  • Any one of the following, attached to the application:

-letter from appropriate faculty/staff on college/university letterhead;

-letter from Registrar’s Office on college/ university letterhead;

-photocopy of registration receipt

3)      Please clarify “Demonstration of financial need”

  • recipients of student loans
  • recipients of commercial loans
  • Demonstrate difficult family/personal financial dynamics, best supported with a letter clarifying their reasons for needing the Education Award.

4)      Does the student have to be full-time?

  • Yes, except under extenuating circumstances, as a part-time student would be deemed to be able to earn necessary monies in her non-academic time.  A care giver of an elderly or handicapped family member or a single mother of a small child might be examples of exceptions to his.

5)      May we “post” the Education Award availability?

  • Yes; however, we will give awards to only the neediest students who also fit the other criteria.  We can only accept applications which your office has vetted and recommended.
  • For each Education Award available, we are asking the faculty or its designate to recommend no more than three (3) students who meet the criteria, advise us of their names, and give them the application forms for us.  Our selection committee will choose from the students whom you have recommended.

6)      Is preference given to upper-year students (i.e.: years 3 or 4 or final year)?

  • The choice is yours as long as you are confident that the recommended student has demonstrated academic diligence.

7)      What is the source of the Education Award funding?

  • The Canadian Federation of University Women West Vancouver receives Community Gaming  Grant funding from the BC Gaming Policy & Enforcement Branch for these awards.

8)      Are male students eligible for an Education Award?

  • We prefer to give the award to a female student as our mandate is to promote the education of women.  We are proactively making these awards in faculties/schools or areas of employment where women are statistically under-represented.  This award is given in the spirit of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms which “does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of ... sex...”(Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms, Equality Rights 15.(2)).

9)      Why can an applicant not be a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women West Vancouver or an immediate family member thereof?

  • The BC Gaming and Enforcement Branch prohibits a funded organization from primarily funding “its own” with gaming dollars.  Our criteria 100% complies with that policy.
  • An immediate family member is defined as any family member living in the same household as a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women West Vancouver, plus any spouse, sibling, child or grandchild of said member.

10)  Who will distribute the Education Award?

  • CFUW West Vancouver will be sending the cheque(s), with a covering letter, directly to the selected student(s). BC Gaming Policy & Enforcement Branch requires us to give the funds directly to the individual students.
  •  Your office will receive a copy, via email, of the covering letter to inform you of the award recipient(s).

11)  What is the deadline?

  • The application form and any pertinent attachments are to be postmarked by October 17, 2014.  (The Langara Financial Aid office will forward the application to the organization.)

12)  How long will the applicants’ application/information be kept on file?

  • Once the applicants’ personal information/application is deemed unnecessary, CFUW West Vancouver will shred the personal information in a secure manner.
