Scholarships & Bursaries
The biology department has scholarships and bursaries available for students enrolled in the biological sciences at Langara. To apply, read through the criteria below and download an application form. Deliver the completed application form to Leni Gelten in room A359c by the indicated deadline.
AWARDED IN THE FALL SEMESTER
No application required.
Real Estate Foundation Biology Awards (approximate value: $175)
To be awarded to the two students registered in Biology 2105 (Bamfield field school) who achieved the highest grades in Biology 1115 and Biology 1215. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5.
Note: two Bamfield bursaries are also available. Apply at Financial Aid before October 15.
AWARDED IN THE SPRING SEMESTER
Applications due by January 31st.
Rose Bing Memorial Scholarship (Approximate value: $100)
To be awarded to a student who has completed first year biology and is enrolled in or has completed at least two of the following second year courses: Biology 2315, 2415, 2330, 2430, 2370 or 2470.
Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated high achievement in the Biology laboratory portion of the courses. Preference will also be given to a student who is planning an Associate of Science Degree in Microbiology/Molecular Biology.
The eligible student must be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.3.
Leni Gelten Biology Scholarship (Approximate value $300)
To be awarded to a student who has completed Biology 1116 and 1216, or any three of the following courses: Biology 1116, 1216, 1190 or 1191.
The eligible student must be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5
Marje and Tony Glass Biology Scholarship (Approximate value $500)
To be awarded to a student who has completed Biology 1115 and 1215 and demonstrated a high level of achievement in both courses. Student must also display a passion for biology.
Preference will be given to a mature student or a student who plans to enter the teaching profession. The eligible student must be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5.
Molecular Biology scholarship (Approximate value $300)
To be awarded to a student who has completed Biology 1115 and 1215 and who has taken or is currently enrolled in at least four of the following second year courses: Biology 2315, 2330, 2370, 2415, 2430, or 2470. A minimum of two of these courses must be completed prior to the application deadline.
The eligible student must be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.33.
Tony Pletcher Memorial Scholarship (Approximate value: $150)
To be awarded to a student who has completed Biology 1115 and 1215 and taken at least two of the following second year courses: Biology 2340, 2350, 2380, 2440, 2450 or 2480. Preference will be given to a student with a strong ecology background.
The eligible student must be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.33.
Elsevier Canada Book Award (Value: $100)
To be awarded to a second year Langara College Nursing student who achieves a minimum of a B+ in Biology 2290 (Pathophysiology) and who demonstrates academic excellence and enthusiasm for Pathology. The eligible student must be registered in a minimum of 9 credit hours. Note: No application required.
