"What I found excellent about the Publishing Program was that it gave me the skills and confidence to start my own publication and work within all areas of graphic design. So often, other programs are heavy on theory and the practical side is less emphasized. With Langara's program we had hours of training with industry standard hardware and software. I could jump into a job immediately and feel confident from layout and pre-press to editing – which is unique in the work place especially at an entry level.
The Pacific Rim Magazine is another strong point. It proved to be an indispensable portfolio piece and gave great insight into the workings of publishing.
Plus you meet like-minded people in the program. After graduating, I started my own publication butter with a fellow alumni, Kris Blizzard. Currently I am working as the Art Director for the national magazine enRoute, in Montreal. With over a million readers each month, the magazine is available exclusively on all Air Canada flights. I am very proud to be part of the team and know my practical training at Langara helped start my career."
“I’m the Senior Communications Designer for Communications Services, UBC. I’m responsible for delivering print materials for UBC students, both in Vancouver and our new Okanagan Campus. I manage a staff of three other designers and two writer/editors.
During the past year I’ve also written several articles on design, and I was a faculty member and speaker at last year’s UCDA (University and College Design Association) Design Summit in Victoria. I recently became a member of the Graphic Designers of Canada. As a grad from the class of 99, I’ve been lucky enough to hire and manage four other Langara grads, and it’s been a wonderful experience.”

“The program provided the bridge I needed between academia and the real world of publishing. The design and editing portfolios I developed while in the program brought me a range of employment opportunities. Potential employers were impressed with my versatility and skill.”
"The Publishing: Techniques & Technologies program at Langara is wise in teaching a wide range of applications because that's the reality in the industry. No one sits and works with one application all day. You are as employable as the number of applications you can handle, and handle well."
"By attending the Langara Publishing program, I obtained the skills needed to pursue my interest in print production and graphic design. Subsequently, despite being tempted by offers which would return me to an editing desk, I held out for a position in layout and pre-press, and I'm currently working as the art director of a trade magazine covering the aviation and aircraft maintenance industries."
"Langara’s hands-on exposure to the many areas of publishing enabled me to make realistic decisions about my strengths and abilities. I have now been employed at Canada Wide Magazines for nearly seven years as a production coordinator, recently adding “studio manager” to my title. Just about everything I learned during my twelve months at Langara comes into play here on a daily basis, and I can easily say the publishing program got me to where I am today."
"I have to hand it to you guys because before the Publishing program I was bartending full time. The program definitely gave me the right combination of skills to move up in this industry (hard work and a keener attitude helped too!)"
"I am using quite a few tools I learned at Langara. I work as a Technical Writer for Honeywell Video in Surrey... basically I help do documentation that the company uses i.e. instruction manuals and quickstart guides and such for the various security cameras that our branch produces. I even get to design boxes from time to time."
