Careers

The training from Langara College's Journalism program is second to none. Over four terms (or just two if you already have a bachelor's degree), you will gain the full spectrum of skills to start a career in the media- whether it is reporting, editing, producing, or designing.

Journalism is the charting of events with the goal of informing citizens of the social, political and economic decisions that affect their lives.  Wokring in the media is a varied, exciting, and fast-paced career.  The job is interesting, the challenges considerable.  Every day is different than the one before and every day requires intelligence, maturity, creativity and professionalism.  The chronicling of events and the telling of people's stories is always engaging and it comes with great responsibility.

The skills of the journalist are portable and can be applied to a variety of media in this multimedia world.  Journalists work as researchers, reporters, writers, editors, designers, video or still photographers, and managers of people and editorial budgets.

When you graduate, where will you work?

Graduates of the Langara Journalism Program work in media jobs all over the world. The traditional starting ground is the small community paper where you “do it all.” While some like the small-town life and stay, others use the experience to move on to daily newspapers, wire and Web news services, magazines, broadcasting, or public relations.

The job market for journalists is competitive but those with talent and drive are never short of employment opportunities.  A willingness to work outside the Lower Mainland has increased their prospects.

Langara's grads have landed jobs in (to name a few):

  • daily and community newspapers: Vancouver Sun, The Province, 24 Hours, Metro, Vancouver Courier, Surrey Leader, Kamploops Daily News, Georgia Straight, Toronto Globe and Mail, Prince George Citizen, Bangkok Post, South China Morning Post (Hong Kong)
  • radio and TV stations: CBC, CKNW, News 1130, Global TV, CTV, CJDV-TV (Fort St. John)
  • websites: CTV.ca, CanadaFootballChat.com, Active.com, bchl.ca (BC HOckey League)
  • magazines: enRoute, Vancouver Magazine, Money Management Magazine (Britain), Alberta Ventures
