Applied Urban and Rural Planning Program

The Applied Urban and Rural Planning Program is currently undergoing a renewal. While many of the APPL courses will still be running for current students, we will not be accepting new applicants to the program until September 2013. The Applied Urban and Rural Planning Program (AURP) provides a practical, skills based training in urban planning. Graduates may work in planning offices or go on to complete a degree at univeristy. Our students mostly have degrees or other College education. They share an enthusism to contribute to planning for livable communities and a more sustainable environment.

Applied Urban & Rural Planning

The Diploma program features:

  • Practical skills focus
  • Project-based learning
  • Study full-time, 4 terms (5 courses per term)
  • Study part-time, as many courses as you can manage
  • Planning courses are scheduled for the evenings
  • Your existing credits may count towards your Diploma
  • Three concentration areas: Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Rural Planning
  • Department Faculty are experienced, professional planners
  • Accredited by the Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians


Courses offered by the Applied Planning Department are usually scheduled in the evening (starting at 6.00pm) to accommodate part-time students. Other courses, support courses and electives are offered in the afternoon.

Course Structure
Students must complete 20 courses (60 credits) although some of these credits may be transferred in from other Colleges and Universities in BC. Of the 20 courses, 11 are applied planning courses, 6 are support courses and the three remaining are electives.

Rural and Small Town Planning (APPL 2410)
