New York: Theatre

Imagine New York City as your classroom!

Dates:  May 14 - June 3, 2012
Program cost: $2490.00

Taxi in New York City

Next May, join instructors Joanne Horwood and Kina Cavicchioli and live in the heart of Manhattan for three weeks while earning University Transfer Credit in English 1191.

  • Explore Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway.
  • Attend several plays and perhaps see one of your favourite stars on stage.
  • Visit Harlem and walk across the famed Apollo stage.
  • Meet with theatre professionals and learn about what happens behind the scenes.
  • Visit historic theatrical hangouts.
  • Learn about film making at the Museum of the Moving Image at the Astoria Film Studio
  • Travel to Philadelphia, home of the oldest theatre in America.
English 1191 in New York gives an overview of the history of  drama and theatre from the Restoration to the present day.  Before leaving for the Big Apple, we will cover  Restoration Comedy and Nineteenth-Century Realism; then our curriculum will be shaped largely by the plays running in New York and Philadelphia in May.

Although New York immediately summons up visions of the Great White Way, we won’t limit ourselves to Broadway: we’ll experience an exciting range of performance from street performance to Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway.

New York Field Studies

We'll also walk in the footsteps of history, visiting important theatrical sites around Manhattan and Philadelphia.  Class discussions will centre on the history of theatre in these cities, as well as the plays we attend: we'll explore how the elements of drama and performance contribute to the overall meaning and experience of plays.

New York is also a center of film and television production, much of which has been influenced by its rich theatrical heritage.  We’ll see a film and visit the Museum of the Moving Image at the famed Astoria Film Studio.

This course is open to everyone: Langara students, students at any post-secondary institution, or just anyone with an interest in theatre, film and television. Participants must meet Langara's admission requirements.
