Study Permits & Medical Insurance

Study Permits

A Study Permit from Immigration Canada allows you to study in Canada.

A Study Permit is usually issued for the length of time that you will study at Langara as stated in the Letter of Acceptance from Langara. (For example, Letters of Acceptance for STEP and LEAP state that students will study for up to one year in English language classes and two years in the University-transfer program.)

You should apply for a Study Permit at the Canadian Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate Office in the country where you live. An officer there will tell you how to apply and what documents you will need to submit. You can also download and print the information.

In many parts of the world, the processing time required to apply for a Study Permit from a Canadian Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate Office can take from 2 to 6 months. It is not advisable to arrive in Canada with only a Temporary Resident Visa. You cannot apply for a Study Permit from within Canada. Please refer to the website of Citizenship and Immigration Canada for more information.

Temporary Resident Visa

A Temporary Resident Visa from Canadian Immigration allows you to enter Canada.

Please click here for a list of countries whose citizens require visas in order to enter Canada.

You should apply for a Temporary Resident Visa at the same time that you apply for your Study Permit. You can download and print the information.

If you will be entering and leaving Canada several times during your studies, you should apply for a Multiple Entry Temporary Resident Visa.

Medical Insurance

Medical services in British Columbia (B.C.) can be very expensive if you do not have a medical plan. As an international student, you must purchase comprehensive health and accident insurance to provide coverage for treatment of illness or injury during your stay in B.C.

The Medical Services Plan of B.C. (MSP) is mandatory basic medical coverage for all British Columbia residents. International students qualify after a waiting period of three months from the date of arrival in B.C.

For the three month waiting period, Langara College has made arrangements for students to obtain private medical coverage through Axis Insurance Managers Inc. You can contact them to send them your information:

Axis Insurance Managers Inc.

Beginning September 1, 2005, all full-time University-transfer or Career Program students who are enrolled in 9 or more credits in the Fall Semester are automatically covered by the Langara Students' Union Health & Dental Plan. This plan will pay for expenses not covered by MSP. The cost of the plan is included in your student fees. For further information about this plan, click here.
