Please use this checklist to help you prepare for your arrival in Canada and at Langara. Feel free to print it out and check off items as you complete them!
- Apply for a study permit, and a temporary resident visa if necessary
- Arrange for medical insurance coverage
- Do the Online orientation
- Register for courses
- Arrange your accommodations through the Homestay office or consider other types of accommodation
- Learn more about life in Vancouver by visiting the City of Vancouver and Tourism Vancouver websites. You can also visit the Vancouver Wikipedia page for information about the city.

Suggested packing list
In your carry-on baggage:
- Important documents (including your passport, study permit or letter of introduction, and medical insurance information) – if you are travelling by air, keep the originals with you and put photocopies in your checked baggage.
- Your Letter of Acceptance from Langara College
- Proof of funds available (Immigration officials may ask to see this upon your arrival)
- Money (cash, credit cards and/or traveller’s cheques)
- Health/medical records (immunization history, allergies, etc – preferably in English)
- Driver’s license/international driver’s license
- Any other official government-issued identification, if applicable
- Contact information for Langara College
- Accommodation information
- Emergency contact information for your home country and in Canada
- Small electronic items (e.g. laptop, iPod, camera, etc.) – if you are bringing electric devices that must be plugged in, please keep in mind that you may need to purchase an adaptor to make them compatible with the Canadian electrical system (110-120V, 6Hz).
In your checked baggage:
- Clothing suitable for Vancouver’s climate (we recommend dressing in layers!)
- At least one pair of comfortable walking shoes
- A warm coat, hat and gloves/mittens for the winter months
- An umbrella, raincoat and waterproof shoes/boots (Vancouver is known for frequent rain)
- Make sure to put a card with your contact information (address and phone number in Canada) inside each of your checked bags
