I would highly recommend GIS courses as an ideal alternative to the classroom format. It offers tremendous convenience and flexibility.
If you wanted to proceed at a pace faster than that which you would encounter in the classroom you could do so. Likewise if you needed to take some extra time to go over any of the material you could do that as well. You can also set your own study times to suit your current schedule. The GIS course material is very thorough and comprehensive.
It is also very well organized and professors are very accessible.
