The winner of the 2015 Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics. Alwyn O’Brien’s ceramic sculptures push the medium as a vehicle to explore the metaphorical and literal question “What is the Vessel?” With an extensive knowledge of the history of decorative arts and a passion for the baroque, O’Brien’s objects challenge the definition of the vessel through the use of lacey hand-rolled coils in a deliberate yet chaotic way to construct volume and shape. She received her MFA in 2010 from the University of Washington in Seattle and her BFA from Emily Carr Institute. Her work is featured in the collections of the Seattle Art Museum, the Surrey Art Gallery, and the Mackenzie Art Gallery. She divides her time between Saltspring Island, B.C. and Vancouver, where she is currently an instructor at Langara College.

Charlotte Falk Fine Arts Faculty

Office: A047

Charlotte Falk is an interdisciplinary designer and educator with a practice spanning industrial design, communication design, public art and architecture. A graduate of the Master of Architecture program at the University of British Columbia and the Bachelor of Design program at the University of Alberta, she most often designs for public space and publications.

Falk’s practice focuses on creative processes at the convergence of disciplines, analog and digital, and 2D/3D/4D. Emphasis is placed on how considerations for materiality, methodology, and technique are generative throughout the design process — and ultimately manifest experientially in design outcomes.

Falk is also a Lecturer at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Her research activities include Design for Public Space, an on-going project through Living Labs at ECUAD that investigates human-scale matters situated in the public realm. Utilizing principles adapted from architecture, urban design, industrial design and community engagement practices, the project incorporates topics of context, way-finding, materiality and scale; as well as the collaborative and practical aspects of working in public space. Stewardship, care, incremental change and place-based knowledge have emerged as defining values for this work.
