Applied Urban & Rural Planning

The Applied Urban and Rural Planning Program is currently undergoing a renewal. While many of the APPL courses will still be running for current students, we will not be accepting new applicants to the program until September 2013. For more information please contact Division Chair Gayleen Wren at gwren@langara.bc.ca or 604.323.5434.

The Applied Urban and Rural Planning Department (AURP) provides a practical, skills based training in urban planning. Graduates may work in planning offices or go on to complete a degree at univeristy. Our students mostly have degrees or other College education. They share an enthusism to contribute to planning for livable communities and a more sustainable environment.

The Department offers one core Program and four programs with concentrations. All off the following:

  • Practical skills focus
  • Project-based learning
  • Study full-time, 4 terms (5 courses per term)
  • Study part-time, as many courses as you can manage
  • Planning courses are scheduled for the evenings
  • Your existing credits may count towards your Diploma
  • Department Faculty are experienced, professional planners
  • Accredited by the Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians

Courses offered by the Applied Planning Department are usually scheduled in the evening (starting at 6.00pm) to accommodate part-time students. Other courses, support courses and electives are offered in the afternoon.

Four Program Concentrations

The four concentrations all include the core 11 Applied Planning courses. The four concentration areas are:

  • Urban Planning,
  • Environmental Planning,
  • Rural Planning
  • Computer Applications and Graphics.

The Computer Applications and Graphics is recommended for students who do not have a degree or do not intend to complete a degree before working in planning.
