| Frequently Asked Questions
-
After reading everything, I'm still confused. Where do I start?
You should start by contacting the provincial regulatory body. For British Columbia it is the College of Dietitions of BC.
-
After being assessed by both ICES and DC that my education is equivalent
to a Canadian degree, I am told I still need to take university courses.
Why? There are two reasons why the Registration committee of the
regulatory body would determine that you require further academic work.
1. Your education is not equivalent to Canadian standards and it requires
upgrading or 2. Your last work experience has been some time ago (longer
than 3 years ago), and must be upgraded.
-
Why do I have to send all my materials to three different places?
ICES is an unrelated body used to assess your academic training
in a fair and unbiased manner. The dietetics profession is regulated
in each province, but the standards are set by the national association
- Dietitians of Canada. Hence, the provincial regulatory body collects
and reviews the assessments made by the other two agencies before finalizing
an applicant's eligibility to enter the profession.
-
Can I apply to DCEP from another province? Yes. You must have
a letter from the province's regulatory body saying you are eligible
to complete the practical experience portion of your application.
-
Can I start the process from outside of Canada? Yes. In fact,
it will be more efficient to do so. You can get your academic work verified
by ICES and DC and reviewed by the provincial regulatory body before
you arrive in Canada. If your dietetics experience is current there
is the likelihood of less academic upgrading required.
-
What type of visa do I require to participate in DCEP? You will
register with Continuing Studies at Langara College and depending upon your status in Canada,
you may require a work visa. Check with your immigration official.
-
Where will the placement opportunities be? The placements will
be throughout British Columbia. We do try to keep all placements within
the same general region for each participant.
-
I have family with whom I must stay. Can I still participate?
We will try to accommodate individuals' needs while making the placement.
However, the placement opportunities are dependent upon the health care
environment of the community, and that must be taken into account. You
should also be aware that this is an intensive program and should be
completed it in a timely manner. It may not always be possible to make
an exact match with the community of your choice, but we will work with
you to determine the best possible options.
- What
is the CDRE - Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination? The CDRE
is an examination that all individuals wanting to use the designation
of "Registered Dietitian" must write. Canadian students write this examination
after completing their internship.
-
Are there any sources of funding to assist me in this program? Students
must be self-supporting but some placements may provide remuneration.
-
Are there employment possibilities for an internationally trained
dietitian in British Columbia and Canada? Yes there are - especially
in the smaller communities throughout the provinces.
