| Greg Blue has worked in Vancouver as a
commercial photographer and art director for over 15 years. Originally
starting in the fashion photography field, he soon found that
he preferred a more methodical approach to photography and eventually
changed to still life and food photography for editorial and advertising
work. The addition of art directing to his career came about from
studying print production techniques in order to better meet the
photographic needs of ad agencies and design firms. During this
time, Greg developed a love for typography, and after studying
under some of the better designers in the business, proceeded
to take on freelance design work.
After working with still life and food for over ten years, Greg
started to feel that his photographic work had stopped progressing
and had become repetitive. He focussed almost entirely on art
directing for the next couple of years until he started to experiment
with illustrative still life photography. This change re-ignited
Greg's passion for photography, and he has now focussed all of
his photographic work in that one area.
His illustrative work relies entirely on concept and Greg often
uses found objects to convey a specific message. Although he usually
has a set concept in mind when producing his images, the images
must be versatile enough for stock photography. Because of this,
Greg will usually prop them in such a way that the images can
effectively communicate a concept in a number of different ways.
He has a love of texture, and therefore works extensively with
tungsten lighting in order to accentuate the surface of his props.
Greg also works primarily with an 8X10 view camera when working
on stock images, but still uses the 4X5 when working on commissioned
images as clients rarely want to pay the production costs of the
8X10. Greg will also work digitally on Photoshop when the concept
of the image demands it, but prefers to work conventionally in
camera whenever possible.
Greg has taught photography since the mid 1980s and has been
the Program Coordinator of the Langara CS Photography Program
since 1997. He has sat as the President of the Canadian Association
of Photographers and Illustrators in Communications (CAPIC) Vancouver
chapter and has also sat as the National President. Greg now sits
as the Past president on the National Board of Directors. While
freelancing will always be Greg's first love, academia holds a
close second. The open sharing of knowledge and enthusiasm has
always meant a great deal to Greg and he finds the student's passion
for the craft and desire to experiment quite infectious. And this
keeps him charged about his own work. |
