Langara College

Journalism CaIn

Overview

Langara College’s Journalism Program graduates work in every major media outlet in Vancouver, across BC and Canada, and around the globe.  For more than 40 years, Langara has established itself as the top school for intensive hands on training in all the skills required for successful careers in print, broadcasting and the web.  The college offers two programs: a two-year Diploma Program that combines academic courses with journalism skills for high school graduates and an eight-month Certificate Program for those with university degrees.  Both programs prepare students for work in community and daily newspapers, magazines, radio and television broadcasting, public relations and on the web.

Students in both programs experience the life of a reporter by researching, conducting interviews, writing stories, and shooting photos for the department’s weekly newspaper, The Voice, that is circulated on campus and in the surrounding community.  Students also file stories, take pictures and produce videos for The Voice’s website.  As students gain practical skills, they work as editors on The Voice, assigning stories, editing, doing page design, photo editing, pagination and uploading to the web.

In the Diploma Program, students also produce the Langara Journalism Review, an annual magazine covering media issues and personalities in Western Canada.
