Overview
The Electronic Media Design (EMD) Program is a 1-year full-time program for training graphic and communications designers specific to interactive and web design. The program teaches web design from a number of perspectives:
- Design strategy: Students learn to research their client’s communication needs, their competition and develop a communications strategy prior to their creative.
- Creative Process: Brilliant ideas rarely come out of the blue, students will begin to learn the process of ideation and concept development.
- Visual Execution: Once a strategy and concept has been developed, students will study the tools we use to execute the concept. Issues such as typography, colour in communications, layout and user-interface are explored in-depth.
- Production: Students come out of the EMD program with a formidable technical skill set in programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro to name a few.
The EMD Program is the primary entry point for many students entering the Applied Arts Division in Continuing Studies. While this program is an end in itself – many EMD students have, immediately upon graduation, gone on to work at some of the top design firms and ad agencies in Vancouver and abroad. However, many other students then pursue further studies in order to expand their skill set into print design, advertising, art directing and commercial photography.
