Digital Film Production
Digital Film Production Certificate (Full Time)
Advanced Camera & Lighting
This practical is designed to give students experience lighting large sets with camera moves using tracks and dollies.
Art Direction
This course covers the functions of a films Arts Dept and the Role the Art Director plays. Through examples on screen, demonstrations, practical tools and exercises, learn how to breakdown a script, address budget issues, use of props and set dress, skills and understand the use of storyboarding.
Art of Editing
This is course details the stages of post-production. Divided into technical and aesthetic topics, you will learn about the role of the lab, film, video and non-linear editing, sound editing and mixing, the role of the editor, post production personnel, history of directing/editing, and editing principles.
Assistant Director
This covers the craft of the assistant director on set. Working with the crew and set protocol .
Canadian Cinema
The history of Canadian Film is rich and varied. You will explore some landmark film and deliver a critique on a director of your choice
Careers
These are one to one meetings with the production instructor to help you with your future goals.
Commercials
This class mixes how commercials are made with the practical application of on set blocking.
Critique of Graduation Films
The Directing instructor reviews students graduation films.
Digital Video Camera
This course covers the use of digital cameras and includes camera functions and composition.
Documentary Camera Crew Tech
This course covers the introduction to the camera and the practical interaction of a 3 person documentary crew shoot. Camera, director and sound recordist.
Documentary Shooting
Students gain hands-on experience in documentary shooting techniques. The course is divided into shooting numerous exercises capturing live footage and learning interview techniques in order to prepare the groundwork for students to shoot a short film from a set brief.
Dramatic Processes
Gain understanding of the complex nature of drama production both technically and creatively. Receive a detailed analysis of all stages of the process from script to post-production including: script breakdown, pre-production planning, choice of format, budget considerations, shooting schedules, use of locations, art department, casting, crewing, rehearsals, the shoot and post-production.
Edit Lab
Open lab to develop editing skills and software knowledge.
Final Cut Pro
This course covers the use of the latest digital video editing software both at beginner and advanced levels. Students will learn editing techniques as they cut their assignments throughout the course
How to Enter the Industry
This course gives you an overview of how the film industry, independent sector and new media operate. Learn about the job market, what skills you will need, who to speak to, which unions to join, where to go for training and how to write your resume and cover letter.
Intro To Video Making
This course introduces students to film language and shooting a small film in defined crew roles.
Music Video
Students learn both the practical and creative aspects necessary to produce and direct a music video. Beginning with the technical requirements of production the different styles employed as well as developing a storyline and breakdown into a production scenario. Followed by a shoot and review of the edited piece.
Producer
Informed by current industry practices and models from research, this course introduces producing for film and television. Follow the complete process of producing a film including presentation of an idea, as well as examining rights and clearances, insurance, budgeting, financing, marketing and distribution ideas. Includes guest speakers.
Script Supervision
This course outlines the jobs functions. Working as a liaison between the producer, director and edit, the script supervisor keeps track of the many details that comprise the making of a film. Students will learn the principles of continuity, job responsibility during pre-production and post- production.
Sound
This practical course covers the use of sound equipment in production. Students learn about microphone choices, radio mics, correct sound levels and how to operate a boom effectively.
The Art of the Director Of Photography
Topics covered include: How the DOP interacts with the director, script breakdown, gels and filters, camera formats and shooting for tape to film transfer. Learn basic lighting techniques, correct exposure and practical on set location lighting. Explore lighting styles of different genres and compositional concerns and analysis of work from past and present masters.
The Director
This is a course outlining the role of the director in dramatic films. Concentrating on visual storytelling, it covers issues ranging from script break-down, interpretation and realization to working with creative collaborators, casting, working with actors, shot design, blocking and set etiquette. Technical aspects such as camera and editing techniques and set and sound design are considered in relation to the director's role.
Students will be able to develop their films throughout the course.
The Practicum
Students shoot and edit their graduation projects
The Short Script
Through in-class screenings, discussions and analysis students develop and write a short film and take it through to production using industry formatting. Students will have some one to one meetings with the instructor.
Digital Film Production Certificate (Part Time)
Advanced Final Cut Pro - Level 3
In this weekend workshop, advanced editing techniques, media management and the Final Cut Studio work flow will be explored. Learn to move your project seamlessly in and out of Motion for titling and compositing or Soundtrack Pro for audio editing and cleanup. Exporting with Compressor for all formats from DVD's to Internet videos will be covered.
Note: Students must bring headphones.
This is held at our Film training centre at the Broadway Plaza Campus
Art of Camera Lighting - Level 1
Through in-class lectures and hands-on practice, learn the artistic techniques needed to be a Director of Photography. The course covers camera functions, exposure, lamp types, composition, visual interpretation, and script breakdown. Two sessions take place in a professional lighting studio where students will be introduced to a variety of lighting set-ups.

Note: The studio shoots will be held on consecutive nights on October 13 & 14.
Art of Camera Lighting - Level 2
This course builds on the Art of Camera Lighting Level 1 and is designed for students with some lighting experience who wish to explore more advanced lighting techniques using HD format, Interior and Exterior lighting, shooting in various weather conditions, and lighting correctly for green screen.
BC Film Industry Orientation
Developed by film professionals, this course is an overview of BCs expanding film industry; it is also requirement before becoming a member of most labour unions. Course topics include the structure of the BC film industry, stages of production, industry jobs, set terminology, set etiquette, basic safety, and communication skills. WHMIS training and certification is also included.
Note: Held at main campus. You may take this course if you are 18 years of age and have completed High school.
Digital Video Cameras Techniques
With growing access to the powerful digital technology we will help you master digital camera techniques. Through classroom instruction and hands-on practice. Using upto-date HD digital video cameras, gain detailed knowledge of camera functions, lenses and composition.
Documentary Film Making
Documentaries inform and entertain us. This course explores styles of research and storytelling. Learn the basics of writing, producing and directing non-fiction films. Build a master plan including treatment, proposal, budget, and shooting script. We also introduce what local, national and provincial funding and educational resources are available to you.
Note: Includes guest speaker when possible.
Dramatic Film Production
Everything you need to know about the complex nature of drama production, both technically and creatively, is detailed in this course. Covering all stages of the process you will gain invaluable practical knowledge from script to post-production including script breakdown, pre-production planning, format choice, budgeting, shooting schedules, use of locations, art department, casting, crewing, rehearsals, the shoot, and post-production.
Editing & Post Production Processes
This courses explores in-depth the stages of post-production. Divided into technical and aesthetic topics, you learn about the role of the lab, film, non-linear editing, digital and HD technologies, sound editing, the editors role, the history of directing/editing, and editing principles. This is invaluable to filmmakers, producers, directors, editors, and anyone generally interested in all aspects of filmmaking.
Feature Film Workshop - From Idea to Treatment
You already have a brilliant screenplay idea, but what next? This course takes you through the process of your script idea through to a treatment over the 4 weeks in a brainstorming workshop environment. Students pitch their ideas, learn correct formatting, develop skills with exercises, polish and re-write their treatments, and find out how to proceed with them.
Independent Film Production
An introduction to the role of the producer and the development of your first film proposals including considerations regarding rights and clearances, insurance, budgeting, financing, marketing and distribution considerations.
Note: This is held at our Film training centre at the Broadway Plaza Campus
Includes guest speaker/screening when possible.
No class October 11th.
Intermediate Final Cut Pro - Level 2
Continuing on from Intro to Final Cut Pro, this course goes beyond basic editing Students learn to utilize the full editing tool palette, using the built-in 3-way Colour Corrector, titling using Boris Calligraphy and better media management. Each week features different projects, giving students the chance to develop techniques for editing documentary, film and music videos.

Introduction to Digital Video Making
This course introduces students to the technical side of making videos using digital technology. Beginning with tape and camera formats, we move onto lighting, framing composition, and shooting techniques. Students learn production methods and edit using Final Cut Pro. Everyone will be given a chance to pitch their projects, and then one or two projects will be chosen for production.
Introduction to Final Cut Pro
Learn the latest version of the widely used Final Cut Pro, the affordable Apple editing program. In this hands-on course, you learn how to digitize and organize material, edit sync and non-sync material, use the trim functions, edit sound, learn basic effects, output to tape and much more. Maximum 11 students.
Note: Students are asked to bring headphones.

Through classroom instruction and practical exercises concentrating on visual storytelling, we cover issues ranging from script breakdown, interpretation, and realization to working with creative collaborators, casting, shot design, blocking, and set etiquette. Technical aspects like camera techniques and set design are considered in relation to the director's role.
Sound on the Set
This practical course is designed to address sound issues during your shoot. Learn about microphone choices and radio mics, how the boom operator affects the sound, documentary sound versus sound for drama, elements in post-production recording, ambient and wild tracks. Learn the importance of correct audio levels and how to put a sound package together for your project.
The Documentary Shoot
Gain hands-on experience in the unique art of documentary shooting in this practical introductory course. The first weekend is spent shooting numerous exercises capturing live footage and learning interview techniques preparing the groundwork for the following weekend where students shoot a short film from a set brief and edit the film using Final Cut Pro.
Writing a Feature Film Script
This intensive screenwriting course is a great opportunity for beginning screenwriters to gain knowledge in how full-length feature film screenplays are written and structured. You are guided through the process and learn about three-act structure, character development, theme, subplots, genre, and much more.
Documentary Production Certificate
A Short History of Documentary
The history of Documentary Film looks at early landmark documentary films both Canadian and International, short documentary films, cinema verite and current trends in documentary films.

Directing Documentaries plus Pitch
This course outlines the role of the director concentrating on analyzing different storytelling techniques, developing a theme and visualization of material, interview methods, shooting for post production, developing a shooting plan, and creative collaboration within a small crew,
Students will develop their graduation films the instructors help.
Documentary Camera and Lighting
Students gain hands-on experience in documentary shooting techniques. The course is divided into shooting numerous exercises capturing live footage and learning interview techniques in order to prepare the groundwork for students to shoot a variety of short films from a set brief.
Producing Documentaries Plus Pitch
Learn how to produce documentaries. Including, presentation of an idea, developing a proposal and pitch, as well as examining rights and clearances, insurance, budgeting, financing, and distribution ideas and all paperwork, scheduling and crewing issues, pertaining to the shooting of a graduation production.
This includes learning and putting together festival packages for the graduation film.
Project Dev & Grant Appl
Students will learn about grant applications and discuss future projects on a one to one basis with the production Instructor.
Research Techniques
Explores styles of research and storytelling and learn about national, provincial and local resources available.
