YOGA TEACHER TRAINING CURRICULUM CONTENT
Yoga
is introduced as a process of living in the present moment through
awakening our physical, psychological and spiritual capacities. Teacher
trainees explore the multifaceted levels of yoga and learn classical
techniques to develop a home practice that will support personal growth
throughout the program.
Yoga History, Theory and Philosophy
Students
learn an overview of the 5,000-year-old history of yoga, exploring the
major scriptures and texts that lay the foundation for the practice.
Teacher trainees are introduced to the important philosophical concepts
and texts including: the laws of karma (cause and effects), dharma
(nature’s law), the Vedas, and Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
Essential Principals of Yoga Practice
The
eight-limbed path of classical Asthanga and Hatha Yoga are
comprehensive systems of transformation and integration. Focused on
keeping the body and mind healthy and flexible, students are introduced
to the yamas and niyamas (ethical precepts), asanas (postures) pranayama
(breath control), pratyhara (sense withdrawal), dharana (concentration)
dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (enlightenment/bliss).
The Science of Yoga and Ayurveda
Ayurveda
is the sister science to Yoga covering principals of development of
physical, psychological and spiritual well-being. By studying the basics
of five element theory, three basic constitution types (vata, pitta,
kapha), and their relationships, teacher trainees learn how to recognize
individual mind-body types and create a daily routine practice.
Anatomy, Physiology, and Subtle Body Systems
The
Western paradigm of organized body systems and the anatomy of the
Eastern subtle body system are covered in this course. Western systems
include: endocrinology, respiratory, digestive, cellular, cardiovascular
and musculoskeletal systems. Eastern systems include: vital energy
channels (nadis), chakras (energy centers), and Kundalini energy.
Yoga Training Practices and Techniques 1
Students
learn the purpose and benefits of holistic yoga classes. They explore
the basic principles behind 28 core asanas (postures), 10 breathing
practices (pranayama), 3 bandhas (body locks), 5 mudras (hand gestures
that direct the flow of life energy) and mantras (sound vibration and
chanting). Trainees learn techniques to develop their personal power,
presence and projection as yoga teachers.
Yoga Training Practices and Techniques 2
Trainees
develop a sound understanding of the benefits, contraindications and
modifications of practice. Particular attention will be given to
understanding to the language of yoga asana, principles of flow, and how
movement and alignment affect the psychosomatic and energy systems.
This study directs teacher trainees towards "stirum sukum asana" –
steadiness, ease of postures and flow.
Yoga Teaching Methodology 1
Optimal
yoga class sequencing is emphasized: mantra, warm-ups, pranayama,
asanas, relaxation and meditation. Trainees learn the principles of
observation, demonstration and verbal cueing for yoga postures so that
students can self-correct and experience the adjustment in their own
body without constant external adjustment.
Yoga Teaching Methodology 2
Embodiment
of personal practice, clarity and conscious communication are necessary
tools required to teach professional yoga classes. By learning and
applying these methods, teacher trainees are able to effectively
demonstrate and teach yogic techniques, creating a peaceful and
non-competitive class environment. They will also learn self-discovery
techniques such as contemplative journaling, dialogue and group
discussion.
Yoga Teacher Training Comprehensive
Students
final practicum in which they teach a beginners yoga class using the
skills and techniques learned throughout the teacher training course.
Additional topics covered throughout the course are: ethical behaviour
and the identity of a yoga teacher, roles and responsibilities inside
and outside the class setting, and meeting the challenges of teaching
yoga. Student will learn the business, marketing and financial aspects
of class development.
Holistic Yoga Practicum
Developing
an on-going holistic yoga practice is an essential part of teaching the
art and science of yoga. After each weekend module there is required
homework, reading, and daily yoga practice. The practicum includes
attending, developing and teaching yoga classes; a mid-term and final
evaluation that requires teaching a yoga class; receiving ongoing
evaluation from peers and teachers.
Yoga Series for Student Teachers
Learn to integrate and practice
learned techniques and methodologies with peers. Within this series,
students develop confidence in teaching through practice, observation,
demonstration, dialogue, and group work. Students will receive
constructive feedback and mentorship from senior teachers.
