The Electronic Music Production Program trains producers on a number of levels, from individuals who will be writing, recording, and producing their own work, to individuals who will be recording, and producing other artists’ works, to composers who will be writing, recording, and producing work for commercial purposes such as scores for film, TV, and games. The recording industry has changed significantly with the ongoing development of recording and producing software, such as Cubase that now allow producers to work independently outside of the studio environment. Often you will find producers only using commercial studios to finalize the mix. The other instruments, vocals, effects, and mixing, will be taken care of outside of the commercial studio, saving significant money for recording artists.
Students in this program will be using either a Mac or PC laptop, an audio interface, and the following software (all of which they keep): Cubase, Ableton Live, Reason, and Native Instruments Komplete, Miroslav Philharmonik, and a mixing package. The students will register the computer and software in their own names. While students will produce the majority of their work on their own computer, they will also be working in some of Vancouver’s top commercial recording studios.
Entry into this program is based on an interview. Students will receive extensive one-on-one instruction and consultation. All instructors are professional musicians and producers from the music industry, chosen for their extensive technical knowledge and industry recognized expertise.
Schedule:
Full-time evening program
Starts every February and September
Classes run Monday - Friday, 6:00 - 10:00 pm
Maximum 16 students per intake
The courses in the part-time program are all stand-alone courses aimed at people who wish to produce their own music. Computer technology has revolutionized the music industry in so many ways, from changing the way that professional studios operate to creating an entirely new genre of home-based music production. Computer programs such as Reason, Cubase, or Ableton Live have made it possible for amateur musicians to compose, produce, mix, master, and publish very high quality music with remarkably little expense. All you need is a good PC or Mac computer, an inexpensive USB keyboard, and the software, which usually costs less than $500 per package. Programs like Propellerhead’s Reason (www.propellerheads.se) allow you to produce original music without the use of conventional instruments. You may create as many mixers, synthesizers, highly complex drum machines, and samplers that play thousands of beautiful acoustic and electronic instrument samples. Reason comes with a complete sampled array of orchestra instruments, loop players, and a mind-boggling collection of effects devices such as reverb, digital delay, vocoders, compressors, and phasers.
For those who also want to record original analogue instruments such as an acoustic guitar, piano or vocals, we use programs such as Cubase (www.steinberg.net) along with a USB interface to record your instruments or vocals directly onto Cubase’s sequencer on your computer, and then use programs such as Reason to accompany the track with as many other instruments as you like.
This program is also very relevant to people interested in using programs such as Ableton Live for live DJing or creating very complex loop based music. The program is also very useful for interactive media designers who wish to produce soundtracks, sound effects or sound bytes. You do not have to be an experienced musician to make very good use of the courses in this program.
