Instructors
Ric Bearisto Instructor +-
Ric, an award-winning
writer/director/producer who was a founding partner in 1980 with The Hy
Perspectives Media Group Inc. where he produced a string of successful
television documentaries. He continues to work actively in the field of
documentary and factual television, concentrating on both one-offs and
series. Ric Beairsto has also written, directed and produced extensively
in the areas of drama and docu-drama, including numerous feature films,
a dramatic mini-series, and several episodic television series.
Ric has acted as a script consultant/story editor on more than 30 feature-length screenplays. He is the author of THE TYRANNY OF STORY: Audience Expectations and the Short Screenplay,
a book about story form in general, and short screenplay form in
particular, which has been used in more than a dozen North American film
schools, including UCLA and the American Film Institute. The TYRANNY OF STORY was first published in 1998, and a second edition, revised and expanded, has been published in 2009.
Jonathan Tammuz Instructor +-
Jonathan, a graduate of the National Film School, UK, has directed and produced feature films, documentaries and shorts. His work, The Childeater, was nominated for an Oscar and Rupert’s Land was nominated for five Genie awards and winner of 6 Leos including Best Director, Best Feature Film. Recent work includes Street Time for Sony Pictures Showtime.
Alec MacNeill Richardson Instructor +-
Alec works as an editor and digital post supervisor for Rugged Media in
Vancouver. Over the past 10 years, Alec has edited shows, music videos
and live concerts for CBC, Bravo, CityTV, MuchMusic and CMT. He is an
experienced Final Cut Pro trainer.
Debra Margolis Instructor +-
Debra started her film career as a Graphic Artist/Animator working
for The Optical House inc. now known as The Effects House in NYC. There
she worked with Pablo Ferro on Main Titles & Trailers for such
movies as “Bullitt”, “The Thomas Crown Affair” & “Midnight Cowboy”.
She designed & constructed the titles for” Madigan’s Millions”
starring Dustin Hoffman, along with many other films.She also designed
& animated a TV Commercial for Hydronics Heating which was nominated
for a Cleo. Debra moved to LA to pursue a career in Script Supervising.
There she worked on Commercials, TV Pilots, Films & Rock Videos,
with such actors as Kevin Costner, Patricia Arquette & such Rock
Stars & Bands as Sting, Devo & X to name a few.
Debra now resides in Vancouver where she is presently working as a
Script Supervisor & teaching classes in her field. Script
Supervision credits include Cold Squad, Mantis, Da Vinci’s Inquest, So Weird, The Collector, Dark Angel, Dead Zone, Just Cause, Masters of Horror, Supernatural & many more.
Cindy Leaney Instructor +-
Editor and Project Manager of the Producer's Workbook (2010);
Cindy Leaney has written, produced and directed in house and on contract
for varied broadcasters including CBC Network, CTV, Showtime UK, PBS,
CNN and CBS Paramount. Her credits include short drama, live current
affairs, magazine series, documentary, commercial and independent
production (Walls for Change, Silver Hugo Award Winner -
Chicago Television Competition). She is a former Documentary
Organization of Canada Board Member (BC Chapter), former VP of Women in
Film Vancouver and has participated on industry juries including the
Emmy Awards, Genie, Gemini and Hot Docs.
Annat Kennet Instructor +-
Annat, a producer/director/editor has worked extensively for the BBC, Channel
4, Cannon Films and others as an Editor on dramas, documentaries, music
videos and commercials. She also worked with Eric Clapton, Julian Temple
and The Rolling Stones, and is a former juror of the Gemini awards for
editing. In recent years before moving to Vancouver she was awarded the
tender by Carlton Television and the British Film Institute to run large
scale professional training programs for novice filmmakers going into
Broadcast Television and was Head of Film and Video at Pimlico Arts a
vocational training program for aspiring Independent filmmakers.
Virginia Keast Instructor +-
Virginia is an experienced television director, associate producer, publicist and
production coordinator and is currently working for CTV. Her work
includes the Discovery channel, HGTV, CBC, CKVU and more.
Paul Jensen Instructor +-
Paul is an avid cineaste and trained as a screenwriter. His feature film
scripts are currently in development with Lightning and Jen Zen
productions. He also works as a story editor on poetry, prose and
screenplays for a wide variety of companies.
Mike Hughes Instructor +-
Mike has been a broadcast television technician, including
work for BCTV and CKVU, a commercial video producer, and media
production instructor for over 30 years.
Gwen Haworth Instructor +-
Gwen has been working in the local independent film and video scene for
fifteen years, in documentary, experimental, short fiction, and music
videos. She recently won the people's award for best Documentary film
She's a Boy I Once Knew, at the Vancouver Film Festival 2007. She also
teaches on the film program at UBC and received a directors internship
from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television.
Roy Hayter Instructor +-
Roy is a member of the Directors Guild of Canada, with over
20 years directing experience in both Drama and Commercials. His
extensive credits include dramas for the CBC, Documentaries for Vision
TV and Leo awards for Best Film and Director.
Tom Fillingham Instructor +-
Tom has been working in film and video since 1974, mostly as a cameraman,
but also producing and directing as well. His work as a DOP and
cameraman is extensive. He has shot over 100 documentary, training, and
informational films. As a DOP on IATSE union 35 mm film productions
(Large Budget Feature Films and Television) his credits include Disney,
HBO, Showtime and as a Camera operator his credits include for work
Columbia, Sony Pictures, Disney movies to name a few.
Shirley Anne Claydon Instructor +-
Shirley Anne's award-winning work has been screened at the Toronto Film Festival, The
Vancouver Film Festival, The Sundance Film Festival, Hot Docs, The
Yorkton Film Festival, and film festivals in San Francisco, Japan,
Italy, Germany and London. Her work has been broadcast on CBC, CTV,
Global, The Knowledge Network, TVO, Vision, The Life Network, Bravo,
WTN, The BBC, Much Music and in Europe and Australia. Shirley has edited
work in English, Spanish, French, and Mandarin. Recent documentary
editing credits include Tailor Made: Chinatown's Last Tailors; Lord of the Brush; Prisoners of Age; Whistler Stories; and Heroines.
Lisa Celotto Instructor +-
Lisa is a storyboard artist and art director with a number of shorts,
features, and events to her credit. She is currently shooting a musical
documentary about a local band called Thee Ahs, and recently worked on
the event design of the First Nations Greeting Pavilion for the 2010
Olympics.
Bojan Bodruzic Instructor +-
Born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and
Herzegovina. During the early 1990s, he spent two and a half years
living as a refugee, while his family struggled to survive in the
besieged Sarajevo. After they were reunited, Bojan and his family moved
to Vancouver, Canada.
Bojan Bodruzic attended Simon Fraser University's Film Program, where
he became interested in alternative forms of and approaches to
filmmaking. Bojan completed a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative
Writing and Film Production at the University of British Columbia. He
recently directed his first feature called 'Immigrant'. Other credits
include cinematographer and editor, Crime; and cinematographer/editor, Amnesiac. Amnesiac
was invited to several film festivals including the 2002 Palm Springs
International Festival of Short Films, 2002 Sarajevo International Film
Festival, 2002 Vancouver International Film Festival, 2002 Ajijic
Festival Internacional de Cine [Mexico], and 2002 Northwest Film and
Video Festival.
Julia Courtenay Instructor +-
Julia has worked in the film industry as a
first assistant director for 14 years. She was the training coordinator
for the Directors Guild of Canada and freelances as an instructor
teaching the B.C. Set Orientation course, WHMIS, Assistant Directing and
Production Assistant Workshops.
