Art & Cultural History Tour of East China

Join textile artist and art historian Jean Kares on a tour of central east China. The tour covers a compact geographic area that was historically the most important economic, intellectual, and artistic centre of China, includes four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and encompasses some of the most picturesque and spectacular scenery in China. Among the highlights are the Shanghai Museum, which houses one of China’s largest collections of art spanning 5,000 years; classical 17th-century Ming dynasty gardens in Suzhou; and a stay on Mt. Huang, which has inspired artists for centuries. Of further special interest to craftspeople are visits to the National Silk Museum (Hangzhou); the Southern Song Dynasty Guan Kiln Museum, production site for China’s famous 13th-century porcelain; the traditional craft workshops of the water towns; and the Shanghai Glass Museum.
