Note: Configurations for the PC and Mac versions of Mozilla Thunderbird, Mozilla Mail and Netscape Communicator are similar.
Prerequisites:
- High speed Internet connection such as Shaw or Telus ADSL. IMAP doesn’t work well with slow connection.
- Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 or newer on PC (older versions are likely to work but not tested).
- Your Langara ID, Password and email address.
- Your home ISP (Internet Service Provider)’s outgoing mail server, user ID and password.
Installations for setting up a mail account in Thunderbird
Start Mozilla Thunderbird.
- If this is the first time Thunderbird is started, select “Email Account ” and click the “Next” button. Go to step3. Otherwise, on the menu bar click “Tools”, then “Account Settings”.
- On the bottom left hand side, click the “Add Account” button, select “Email Account” and click the “Next” button.
- On the Identity window, enter your name in “Your Name” , and your Langara College email address in “Email Address” (e.g. asmith@langara.bc.ca).
- Click the “Next” button.
- On the Server Information window,
- For Select the type of incoming server you are using, choose “ IMAP”.
- For Incoming Server:, enter:
message.langara.bc.ca - If this is the first time you use Thunderbird, the program will prompt you for an “Outgoing server”. Enter your ISP's outgoing mail server here.
- Click the “Next” button.
- On the User Names window. At the Incoming User Name box, enter your Langara ID (9 digits). Click the “Next” button.
- On the Account Settings window,
- At the Account Name: box, enter:
Langara Account or a name of your choice. This is just a name to identity your account. - Click the “Next” button, then “Finish”.
- For Thunderbird first time user ONLY: If this is the first time you use Thunderbird, you'll see a screen prompting you to confirm whether Thunderbird should be the default mail client. Click “Yes”, and then “Cancel” to not logon to the mail server. On the menu bar, click “Tools”, then “Account Settings” to configure SSL.
- At the Account Name: box, enter:
- On the left hand side of the Account Settings window, a new account named “Langara Account” (or a name of your choice) will appear on the left side of the screen. Under Langara Account you should see sub-menu options like “Server Settings” and “Copies & Folders”. If not, double click on “Langara Account"” to show all options.
- Check that “Langara Account” is highlighted on the left. On the right hand side,
- Check that the “Email Address” box shows the correct email address.
- Fill in the “Organization” box if you wish (Langara College) .
- On the left side, click on the first sub-menu option “Server Settings” (under “Langara Account”).
- Check that the “User Name” box shows the your Langara ID.
- In the Server Settings section,
- Check the option “Use secure connection (SSL)”. The College strongly recommends that you use SSL for a secure connection to the mail server.
- If you have other email account in Thunderbird and don’t want to logon to all accounts when the program starts up :
- Uncheck the option “Check for new messages at startup”
- Check the option “Empty Trash on Exit”
- Click on the “Advanced” button in the middle of the window.
- Check that “IMAP server directory” is blank.
- Uncheck “Show only subscribed folders” to show all mail folders in your account.
- Click the “OK” button.
- Check that “Langara Account” is highlighted on the left. On the right hand side,

- On the Account Settings window, click “Outgoing Server” on the left. This menu option contains your home ISP’s outgoing mail server information. If you have been using Thunderbird to connect to your home ISP’s email account, you wouldn’t need to change this section. Otherwise, make sure:
- For Server Name:, enter your home ISP’s outgoing mail server. Leave Port 25 as default.
- Check User name and password
- For User Name:, enter your home ISP’s User ID (not your Langara ID).
- For Use Secure connection:, select “No” unless your ISP supports SSL.
- Click the “OK” button to close the Account Settings window.
- On the Account Settings window, click “Outgoing Server” on the left. This menu option contains your home ISP’s outgoing mail server information. If you have been using Thunderbird to connect to your home ISP’s email account, you wouldn’t need to change this section. Otherwise, make sure:

- All configurations are done. You can logon to your College mail account by double clicking the “Get Mail” icon.
