Langara College is a member of the eduroam (Education Roaming) network. Students, staff, and faculty of eduroam institutions can use their home campus login IDs and passwords to get secure wireless access at campuses around the world.
Currently, over 30 Canadian campuses (such as UBC, SFU, and McGill) and hundreds of international ones (including Cambridge and the University of Hong Kong), belong to eduroam.
How Does This Work?
Your laptop or other wireless device must first be configured. Instructions for various devices and Operating Systems can be found at the bottom of this document.
Once your device is configured, you can use your Langara Lab ID and password for Internet access on other (eduroam) campuses. If you are visiting Langara from a participating institution, you can use your own home campus ID and password here.
It is a good idea to test your configuration at your home institution. If there are problems, your IT help desk can assist.
How Do I Log In?
Users are required to have a Wi-Fi device and an active computer account at their home institution in order to log in to eduroam. Your Login ID will be the same as that used at your home institution, with the addition of your home institution domain.
A person from Langara, for example, would use their computer ID + langara.bc.ca (example jsmith@langara.bc.ca). Someone from UBC would use something like mjones@ubc.ca.
What If It Doesn't Work?
If you require any support, you must contact your home institution.
Langara staff, faculty and students can reach Langara’s IT Department by calling (604)323-5999 or by emailing ithelp@langara.bc.ca. Support is limited after 5pm on weekdays or on weekends.
What Restrictions Apply?
- You must adhere to the acceptable use policies of your home institution and the visited one.
- At the very least, eduroam provides connectivity for web browing, secure shell (SSH), and VPN. Additional services may or may not be provided by each institution.
- You should follow safe computing practices, including keeping your software up to date, using anti-virus software, and using encrypted network protocols (HTTPS & SSH) when possible.
