Wireless
The two Langara wireless networks ("LangaraSecure" and "Langara") provide the following services, for current students and staff only:
1. Access to the Internet
2. Access to email via the myLangara portal
3. Access to H: J: and I: drives (Mac: Falcon, Eagle or Jay), via myfiles netStorage.
As the name suggests, LangaraSecure is the better of the two networks to use.
This is because all "LangaraSecure" network traffic is encrypted. Encryption prevents electronic eavesdropping on your network activity.
With the "Langara" wireless network (as opposed to "LangaraSecure"), only the initial username and password authentication is encrypted.
If you cannot connect to "LangaraSecure" for any reason, however, you can connect to "Langara."
A link to a page describing how to connect to both networks is found at the bottom of this page. Please read the following important material, however, rather than skipping directly to the link.
Coverage
Langara wireless is available throughout the campus. However, in A building, only the first floor is covered. Full coverage in A building is anticipated to start in January 2010.
Note: Printing is not yet available from the wireless system. You will need to save your documents to disk and print from a computer lab or office.
Guidelines and Acceptable Use Policy
The Langara Wireless service is a part of the Langara Computer System. The Langara "Computer and Computing System Use" policy must be followed by all users.
Support
Langara College does not sell, rent or lend portable computers or network cards. Personal computers are not supported by our IT Staff.
We can provide connectivity support such as diagnosing a login problem, but we cannot perform software or hardware upgrades or repairs to your personal property. Please refer to your computer manufacturer's website for such assistance.

To Connect to LangaraSecure
The LangaraSecure wireless network uses the XpressConnect utility to set up laptops with wireless profiles.
This utility will automatically configure the necessary parameters to allow you to make a secure connection. This configuration will not replace or interfere with other wireless connections you make off-campus.
XpressConnect requires one of the following operating systems:
- Windows XP SP2 or newer
- Windows Vista
- Windows 7
- Mac OS X Tiger (10.4)
- Mac OS X Leopard (10.5)
- Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6)
To Run The XpressConnect Utility Setup For LangaraSecure
- In your PC or Mac's wireless network interface search for wireless networks.

- Connect to the “Langara” wireless network.
- Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari. You’ll be redirected to a portal page.
- Click on the "Automatic Setup" icon, highlighted in red below.

- Once the new windows loads, click on the Start button.

- A prompt will appear asking you if you allow this program to run. Click "Allow."
- Enter your Novell user ID and Password. This is what you use to login to lab or office computers on campus.

- The utility will automatically setup the LangaraSecure profile. If everything goes well, you’ll see the following:

- A new browser window will open and take you to www.langara.bc.ca.
If it doesn't work...
If you’re having problems connecting to “LangaraSecure” you can follow the following steps.
- Get the latest drivers for your wireless network card from the manufacturer of your wireless device. For example if you bought a dell laptop, you can visit www.dell.com and download and install the latest drivers.
- Install the latest system updates or the latest firmware. For example, you can use Windows update to install all the latest patches. Mac users can run SoftwareUpdate from the Apple menu.
- For really old wireless network cards, you get higher performance if you purchase a new USB wireless card.
- Use the “Langara” wireless network instead of “LangaraSecure”. Enter your ID and password in the fields below the "Automatic Setup" icon you clicked in Step 4 above.
- Call the IT Service Desk at 604-323-5999.
