Software Requests

  • Langara employees are eligible to receive certain software for home use. Currently-licensed packages include:
  • MS Office (Windows or Macintosh)
  • Sophos Anti-Virus (Windows or Macintosh)
  • MS Visio Professional (Windows)
  • MS Project Standard (Windows)
  • Maple 9.5 (Windows. Faculty only.)
  • Linotype Font Library (Windows or Macintosh. Creative Arts Faculty Only.)
  • Statsgraphics (Windows. Students & Faculty)

With the exception of Statsgraphics, this software can be obtained from IT. Statsgraphics can be obtained at the College Library.

Before receiving the software, you will be required to sign a user agreement, some terms of which are as follows:

  • The software may be used on only one home computer.
  • The software media may not be copied or distributed.
  • The software will be used for Langara-related purposes only.
  • Upon termination of employment, the software must be uninstalled.
  • Upon termination of any of these licensing agreements, the software must be uninstalled.

For more information, contact the IT Service Desk at 604-323-5999 or icshelp@langara.bc.ca.

Computer Lab Software Requests – Instructor Information

  1. Requests should be made at least one term (four months) in advance—to allow IT time
to test the software and ensure that it does not conflict with other software on the system.
  2. All correspondence should be by e-mail to IT (pclabrequest@lists.langara.bc.ca), cc’ed
to your Department Chair. Include the following:
    1. Your first and last name
    2. Software name and version
    3. Link to software
  3. When a requested change may impact other users, IT may delay or ultimately reject the
request after discussing such consequences with affected users.
  4. Requests must not break the College Policy on Computers and Computing Use, including
but not limited to impacting existing operations, security, or authentication mechanisms.

When requested to install software,

  1. IT will do preliminary research to determine compatibility with college systems.
  2. IT will determine whether or not the licensing agreement can be legally met on the
    college network/systems.
  3. IT strongly suggests that one copy of the software be then ordered for testing, before
    ordering mass quantities for labs.
  4. IT will perform a test installation, after which it will invite instructor(s) to test that the
    installation meets instructor needs.
  5. IT will discuss any limitations, restrictions, or shortcomings of the testing/licensing
with all involved, and work towards a solution.

IT is the final authority in determining whether software can be supported.

In cases where College resources cannot support particular software, every attempt will be made
to find suitable alternatives.
