A mailing list is quite simply, a list of addresses, identified by a single name. When an email is sent (posted) to a mailing list, it is automatically forwarded to all the addresses (subscribers) in the list. It is an ideal way for people to start or enter into discussions of interest to all the subscribers of a particular list.
At Langara, the mailing list of choice is known as Mailman.
