Co-operative Education

The Co-op Process

We are currently accepting applications from students wishing to start a co-op work term in May 2010. If you have not already submitted your application, drop by the co-op office, A167, to pick up an application form. We begin posting jobs in January.

For the Spring 2010 term, we are offering two sections of BUSM 2300. Consult the College online calendar for dates and times. Remember, this is a prerequisite for participation in co-op.

Job Search and Interview Process

The co-op job search and interview process begins one term prior to your co-op work term. For example, if you are planning to do a co-op work term in May, you will apply for jobs posted in the Co-op Education Department in the January to April academic term. Co-op placements are available every term.

Job Postings
Jobs are posted online in the “Co-op Current” group on myLangara and on paper on the job boards in the co-op office, A167. Once you are accepted into co-op, go to myLangara to request access to the “Co-op Current” group.

When you want to apply for a co-op job, submit your application package to the co-op office before the application deadline. Unless indicated otherwise, we ask for paper copies. You can apply for as many positions as you want as long as you meet the minimum requirements. In fact, we recommend that you do not limit your opportunities by only applying to a handful of jobs.

For the Government of Canada jobs, preference will be given to qualified Canadian applicants. If you do not hold Canadian citizenship, it is unlikely that you will be successful in obtaining one of these positions.

Application Package
Your application package should include a targeted resume and a cover letter. Some employers, BC Hydro for example, ask that you submit a company-specific application form in addition to your resume and cover letter. These forms are available in the co-op office and on myLangara. If the employer asks for a copy of your transcript, the co-op department will provide it to them.

When the job posting deadline is over, we will courier the application packages to the employer.

Interview Schedules
The employer will let your Co-op Education Instructor know which applicants they have chosen to interview. The Co-op Office will then contact you to set up a time and date for the interview.

A copy of the job description with interview details including date, time, location and interviewer will be left for you at the front desk of the co-op office. Most interviews are held off campus at the employer’s site.

Hiring
Once the employer has chosen a student, they will notify your Co-op Education Instructor of their selection. The Co-op Education Instructor will then get in touch with the successful candidate. If an employer contacts you directly to offer you a job, confirm your interest in the position but advise them that they should contact your Co-op Education Instructor.

Registration
Once your co-op placement is confirmed, you register for either COOP 2301, COOP 2501, COOP 3301, or COOP 4301. This is based on the number of co-op terms you have previously completed. The course is graded by your Co-op Education Instructor. (letter grade)

Co-op courses are listed in Langara College’s online calendar.
