Langara is growing. With the new Library Classroom, renovated 'C' Building, and new Students' Union Building, the campus building area has increased 17% compared to 1999. This increase presents a challenge for energy management on campus. Energy efficient design and construction standards are critical.
Langara continues its efforts to reduce its energy consumption and improve efficiency. Langara voluntarily adopted LEED Gold as a standard for new building construction on campus. The Library/Classroom building, renovated 'C' Building, and Students' Union Buildings are built to LEED Gold standards.
What’s Happening Now?
This summer, Langara College hired an energy manager through the BC Hydro energy manager program to carry on its mandate to become more energy efficient and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Ongoing Energy Projects Include:
- Controls upgrade in 'B' Building to improve integration capabilities.
- New digital control valves in 'A' Building to provide zone control over heating and allow the central heating and cooling plant setpoints to be optimized.
- Final commissioning of 'C' Building to LEED Gold commissioning standards.
- Building electrical sub metering initiative to understand the campus electricity usage breakdown – “you can’t manage what you can’t measure”.
- Feedback to Langara Community on energy usage and management on campus through new sustainability website.
- Approved for BC Hydro Continuous Optimization Program - will focus on optimizing the existing systems and schedules on campus.
