An energy retrofit program was implemented throughout the College facilities in 2000 and 2001. Measures that improved energy efficiency included:
- Lighting system upgrades including installation of compact fluorescent systems, electronic ballasts, T-8 lighting and occupancy sensor. The occupancy sensor conserves energy by automatically turning off lights when motion is not detected in a room.
- Turning off of lights by janitorial and night security staff in any unused rooms.
- Building weatherization.
- Installation of energy management control systems.
- Upgrading of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning including the installation of variable air volumes and building automation controls.
- Comprehensive staff training and awareness programs.
Monitoring & Verification
Langara uses an on-line energy management tool for monitoring, targeting and reporting of energy and Greenhouse Gas (GHGs) usage and savings reporting.
Standard Reports will be generated quarterly are available to the College community.
They include:
- Utility Performance including GHG Emissions Summary by Year
- Overall Cumulative (CUSUM) Analysis of the Difference in Electricity and Fuel Usage on Campus compared to 2000
- Energy Savings Analysis by Year; includes baseline adjustments for construction and new buildings and weather correction.
- Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Report.
The above reports include baseline adjustments for construction and new buildings and weather correction.
Since January 1, 2000, Langara has saved 10,702,183 kWh. This is enough energy to annually heat and power approximately 37 homes in the community or the emissions of 53 cars on the road.
The total GHG savings since 2000 is 2,012 tonnes; equivalent to planting 51,659 trees in the area.
The total savings since 2000 is 33,768 GJ of natural gas.
The current rate of savings is equivalent planting 19.5 trees every day.
