Johnstone scored a “hat trick" ...but not by playing hockey.
Johnstone Metzger received three scholarships in March, 2009—after receiving two other scholarships in 2008. Once he learned of his good fortune, he began to feel uncomfortable accepting so much money from charitable donors.
Inspired by Wayne Gretzky, who achieved so many assists in his career, Metzger felt an obligation to share his good fortune and help others “score their goals”.
Johnstone is a student of Classical Studies at Langara College. In the Greece Field School program students earn history credit as part of their Associate Degree. “Students have the opportunity to embark on a personal journey through Greek history while also experiencing modern Greek culture and landscape,” says Gwyneth Lewis, organizer of the Greece Field School. Johnstone states “For classical studies, it is important for students to experience the sites and architecture in person to have a real sense of history.”
However, two of his fellow students in classical studies couldn’t join the class on the field studies tour of Greece this May, due to lack of funds.
Johnstone believes in paying it forward. He donated all of his scholarship money so these students can participate in the Greece Field School program. He is also helping raise more funds to lay the groundwork for the next field school. Once the College learned of his efforts, they doubled the money, providing sufficient funds for all the students to make the trip without financial hardship.
