Description of Position:
The Disability Services Consultant independently identifies and assesses the individual educational support needs of students with disabilities and develops and approves accommodations for students to access College programs and courses. The Disability Services Consultant performs case management of individual students including: interviewing, reviewing psycho-educational assessments, specialist reports and other medical documentation, determining and facilitating accommodations, liaising with internal and external service providers, and providing support and advice to students. Additionally, this position assists the Manager in the promotion of access for students with disabilities by developing and providing workshops, materials, and information to staff, instructors and external stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Special Education, Psychology, Counselling, Social Work or relevant field.
- Four years experience in interviewing, assessing, determining and providing support services to adults with disabilities in an educational setting. Post-secondary experience preferred.
- Knowledge of guidelines, regulations, procedures and policies governing the provision of support services to persons with disabilities in a post-secondary environment.
- Knowledge of counselling techniques and adaptive technology.
- Experience in case management of individuals with diverse disabilities such as learning disabilities, visual impairments, and mental health conditions.
- Experience reviewing and evaluating psycho-educational assessments, specialist reports and other medical documentation.
- Experience presenting workshops, seminars and preparing presentation materials.
- Experience working with standard PC systems and applications and office practices and procedures.
- Effective problem-solving, organizational and time management skills.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to respond and deal effectively with change and crisis situations.
- Ability to use tact and discretion to deal with or settle complex requests.
- Ability to develop, recommend and implement new strategies, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to interpret and apply College, government, agency, and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain student
files in a confidential manner.
- Ability to remain current in the field by attending professional development training, workshops, seminars and conferences.
Salary Range: Salary placement on Langara instructors’ salary scale in accordance with qualifications and experience.
Length of appointment: February 29 – April 30, 2012
