Applied Urban and Rural Planning Instructor

Subject Area: Applied Urban and Rural Planning

Description of Position:

Courses in the Applied Urban and Rural Planning Program stress practical applications of planning. The courses provide students with a strong background in planning principles and planning practice. They also introduce students to various issues of planning. These Applied Planning courses use a project-based teaching approach with an emphasis on case studies and in-class team assignments.  For major assignments students prepare practical planning projects.

The College is recruiting instructors for the following courses:

 Fall 2012:

  • APPL 1110 Introduction to Planning
  • APPL 1130 Introduction to Planning Methods
  • APPL 2340 Advanced Planning Methods

Spring 2013:

  • APPL 1210 Urban Planning - Neighbourhood Planning
  • APPL 2440 Planning Sustainable Cities - Capstone course
  • APPL 2430 Planning Process and Law

Classes start at 6.00 pm and finish at 9.00 pm. Additional time is required for the instructor to be available to students in scheduled office hours at Langara College. Field trips may be involved as well during the term.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or Masters Degree in Urban Planning or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three years post-qualification practical experience working in planning for a municipality, government, consultants, or rural planning agency.
  • Significant and direct and relevant experience of planning.
  • Membership or prior membership of the PIBC or Canadian Institute of Planners.
  • Teaching experience, although not required, would be an advantage.

Length of appointment: September 1 to December 31, 2012 and/or January 1 to April 30, 2013.

Start Date: September 1, 2012 and/or January 1, 2013

Salary Range: Salary placement on Langara instructors’ salary scale in accordance with qualifications and experience.
